The Sea Dogs put up a 68-73 record in Kevin Boles’ second season as manager to finish fourth in the division, but that is not the only consideration for success.
Start with Jackie Bradley Jr., who made his first Double-A appearance on June 5, and it was soon evident why he was the No. 5-ranked prospect accoring to Baseball America. He went on to hit .271 (62 for 229) with 16 doubles, two triples, 29 RBI, 35 walks, and 37 runs. Bradley hit .315 (146 for 463) with 42 doubles, four triples, nine homers, 87 walks, and 63 RBI in 128 games with Salem and Portland. It was his only season in Portland because Bradley made the Red Sox opening-day roster for the 2013 season.
Bryce Brentz was named the team MVP, appearing in a team-high 122 games, hitting 296 with 17 homers and 76 RBI. He led the team in batting (.296), hits (135), doubles (30) and RBI (76), and was selected to the All-Star team with teammates Chris Hernandez and Reynaldo Rodriguez.
Hernandez went 4-8 with a 3.13 ERA in 18 starts for Portland. Rodriguez hit .257 with 27 doubles, three triples, 16 homers and 49 RBI before a call-up to Triple-A Pawtucket on Aug. 1.
Right-hander Jeremy Kehrt appeared in 25 games for Portland, including 14 starts. He led the team with eight wins, notching an 8-3 record with a 4.15 ERA, including a 6-0 record with a 2.70 ERA after the All-Star break.
Shortstop Xander Bogaerts hit .326. After being promoted Aug. 9, Bogaerts hit safely in 19 of 23 games with Portland, including 10 multihit contests.
Outfielder Jeremy Hazelbaker ranked among league leaders in stolen bases (33) and slugging (.479), hitting .273 with 21 doubles, six triples, 19 home runs and 64 RBI in 114 games. He was promoted to Triple-A Pawtucket on Aug. 27, and ranked among Red Sox minor league leaders in batting (.273), home runs (19) and steals (36) between the two teams.
