Allen Afield: Get personal lessons about nature first, then turn to books
As we travel around woods or on water or just walk or bicycle down a country road, some nature observations may leave us baffled. Our parents, relatives or acquaintances had never given us an explanation for what we’re scrutinizing, so we scratch our heads in bewilderment. These sightings and the unanswered questions they prompt may […]

Hunting: Getting next generation geared up
My son is getting an early birthday present this week. His birthday isn’t until the end of the month, but youth waterfowl day is this coming Saturday, and as the gift involves duck hunting, I figured why wait? I’ll tell you what it is, but you have to promise not to say a word. He’s […]

Freshwater Fishing: Juvenile salmon looking good around Sebago
Fishing doesn’t seem to have improved too much despite the weather cooling a bit. Biologists are still busy more with fish than fishermen. REGION A: SOUTHERN MAINE Biologists monitoring salmon production around Sebago Lake have some good news. “There seem to be salmon making good use of the upper part of the drainage and there […]

Mark Latti: Prime time arrives for surf-casters
Fall in Maine is any angler’s dream. As the nights get cooler, water temperatures drop and fish become more active. On inland lakes and streams, once reluctant trout and salmon start to reappear, feeding in the shallower waters, and in the Gulf of Maine the fall migration is set to begin. Many fish species call […]

Boating: Storm reveals strengths and leaks of new boat

Through the wonders […]

Hiking: Take it easy in Baxter’s working forest
At the northern end of Baxter State Park is the 29,587-acre Scientific Forest Management Area, a wild area of deep woods, lakes, ponds and streams, and not much else besides moose. It is also the only place in the park where timber harvesting is allowed, per the desires of Percival Baxter, who believed having such […]

Artful crafts
ATKINSON - Jerry Stelmok never thought he'd become one of the masters of an iconic Maine tradition. But building replicas of a 130-year-old Maine canoe is carried on at his home at a steady pace.

The classic wooden canoes he produces at Island Falls Canoes are modeled after some of the oldest Maine-made products and even in the worst times, Stelmok's trade has persevered.

"I've been through three recessions and lasted. It's a precarious market. But people always want canoes," said Stelmok, relaxing at his kitchen table in rural Maine.

Kid Tracks: Climbing the Camden hills in the heat turns out to be cool
After a summer of paddling adventures, my family was ready to hit the hiking trails again in September. Camden Hills State Park has been on our list of hiking destinations to explore, so we made plans with a friend to visit. We loved the trails, especially the views from the tops of Mount Megunticook and […]
