AUGUSTA — Fifth-seeded Oceanside scored the first 10 points of the game and held off top-seeded Hampden Academy to pull out a 66-63 upset in a Class A North boys’ basketball semifinal Wednesday night at the Augusta Civic Center.
The Mariners (15-5) will play Medomak Valley (17-3) for the regional championship Friday afternoon in Augusta.
Five players scored in double figures for Oceanside, which never trailed and led by as many as 17 points.
The Mariners held an 18-10 lead at the end of the first quarter, then started the second quarter with a 10-2 run to make it 28-12 with five minutes left in the first half.
But Hampden Academy (19-1), which had won four consecutive Eastern Class A titles, closed to within 36-26 before the half ended, finishing the second quarter with a 10-3 surge.
Then the game got even tighter. The Broncos started the second half by scoring 10 of the first 11 points to cut their deficit to 37-36.
Oceanside regrouped, however, and scored the final seven points of the third quarter to carry a 51-41 lead into the final eight minutes.
Hampden got as close as three points late in the game when Nick Chasse put in an rebound, but Oceanside held on to make it to a regional final for the first time since the school was formed in 2011 as a consolidation between Rockland and Georges Valley.
Sam Atwood scored 16 points to lead Oceanside. Nick Mazurek added 14, Keenan Hendricks had 13, and Riley Sprague and Nate Raye each finished with 10.
Ian McIntyre led Hampden with 24 points, while Chasse scored 13.
The two teams didn’t play each other during the regular season.
