Berry leads Red Claws to victory over Energy
Davion Berry scored 23 points and Jordan Mickey added 22 to lead the Maine Red Claws (9-6) to a 113-83 win over the Iowa Energy (7-9) on Monday night at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines, Iowa.
Malcolm Miller chipped in 16 points for the Red Claws, who used a strong second quarter to build a 49-34 halftime lead and were never threatened in the second half.
Maine also got 13 points from Coty Clark and 12 points and 10 rebounds from Omari Johnson.
The Energy were led by Terry Whisnant with 21 points.
HOCKEY
WORLD JUNIORS: Linus Soderstrom made 46 saves and Alexander Nylander scored as Sweden shut out the United States 1-0 in the world junior hockey championship at Helsinki.
Nylander plays in the Ontario Hockey League and is expected to be selected in the 2016 NHL draft. Soderstrom was a fourth-round pick of the New York Islanders in the 2014 draft.
The United States, which falls to 1-1 after beating Canada in its opener, will face Switzerland on Wednesday and Denmark on Thursday.
SKIING
WORLD CUP: A lack of snow and mild temperatures in central Europe have forced the International Ski Federation to reschedule four World Cup races in the first half of January.
FIS said it moved two slaloms planned next week for Zagreb, Croatia, to the Italian resort of Santa Caterina, which will host a women’s race on Jan. 5 and a men’s event the next day.
The men’s World Cup is currently visiting Santa Caterina for a downhill on Tuesday.
Also, two women’s speed races on Jan. 9-10 were rescheduled from St. Anton to Altenmarkt-Zauchensee, both in Austria.
OBITUARY: Stein Eriksen, the Norwegian great who helped usher in modern skiing with his graceful style, died at his home in Park City, Utah. He was 88.
Eriksen rose to prominence at the 1952 Olympics in his hometown of Oslo when he captured gold in the giant slalom and silver in the slalom. Two years later, he won three gold medals at the world championships in Are, Sweden.
SOCCER
ENGLAND: Arsenal moved to the top of the Premier League with a 2-0 win against Bournemouth, while Manchester United Manager Louis van Gaal said there was “not any reason” for him to resign despite a 0-0 draw with Chelsea extending his team’s winless run to eight matches.
Goals by Gabriel Paulista and Mesut Ozil led Arsenal while goalkeeper Petr Cech set a Premier League record with his 170th shutout.
EL SALVADOR: Authorities say gunmen shot and killed former national soccer team player Alfredo Alberto Pacheco.
Pacheco was one of the players on El Salvador’s national team who was banned for life by the Salvadoran Soccer Federation in 2013 – a punishment ratified by FIFA – for match-fixing.
TRACK AND FIELD
SPAIN: The country’s sports council suspended steeplechaser Angel Mullera for two years for doping.
Mullera was promoted to bronze medal position in the 2014 European Championship 3,000-meter steeplechase after Mahiedine Mekhissi was disqualified for taking off his shirt and bib for the last 100 meters.
