Rick Kowalsky, the head coach and general manager of the Maine Mariners, has agreed to a three-year contract extension, the team announced Tuesday.
Kowalsky guided the Mariners to a second-place finish in the ECHL’s North Division in his first season as the team’s head coach. Maine was 42-21-6-3 in the regular season and won a playoff series for the first time in franchise history before getting eliminated in seven games by the Wheeling Nailers in the North Division finals.
A former Portland Pirates player, Kowalsky was a head coach in the American Hockey League for 11 seasons and an NHL assistant coach for the New Jersey Devils for three seasons. He was hired as Maine’s head coach after Terrence Wallin left to take a job as an assistant coach with the Lehigh Valley Phantoms of the AHL.
