Stanley Jefferson Smith
ALFRED – Stanley “Stan” Jefferson Smith, 72, a resident of Alfred, formerly of Kennebunk, died peacefully Thursday, Dec. 7, 2023 at Seal Rock Healthcare in Saco, with his three children and his sister by his side.
Stanley was born May 27, 1951 in Saco, the son of Royal W. and Jean R. (Reynolds) Smith and graduated from Kennebunk High School, class of 1969, where he played the drums in the school band. As a youth, he worked very hard in his family owned business, Lawns by the R.W. Smiths, digging graves in local cemeteries, and landscaping.
After high school, Stanley joined the U.S. Coast Guard and was on the #629 Decisive and Stationed at Fletcher’s Neck Life Saving Station in Biddeford Pool as well as Cuckolds Island Lighthouse in Lincoln. When he returned in 1973, he returned to Lower Village and assisted with running Port Motor Truck doing auto repair, and operated a heavy-duty wrecker service (home of the “Hooker-Too” heavy-duty wrecker). Stanley also worked at McCabe’s hauling bait and owned/operated his own Lobster boat the “Torie Anne” and was a volunteer fire fighter for Washington Hose Fire Company in Lower Village.
Some of Stan’s favorite hobbies include playing the drums in the Lower Village Sunoco Gas Station band and anything Led Zeppelin. He also enjoyed creating and putting together large and small models, as well as carpentry.
Stanley was predeceased by his parents; and by brothers Andrew Smith and Steven Smith.
Survivors include his children, Torie (and her husband Jacob Arsenault) of Alfred, Rain Liao of Tallahassee, Fla., and Tanya Salva of Wiggins, Miss.; sister, Gail Moulton of Rochester, N.H.; as well as six grandchildren; and two nephews.
A small graveside service will be held at Arundel Cemetery in Kennebunkport on Tuesday, Dec. 12 at 11 a.m., followed by a Celebration of Life at 12 p.m. at the American Legion Hall, Post #159, 102 Main St., Kennebunkport, ME 04046.
