University of Maine guard Anne Simon was named the America East women’s basketball player of the week for the second straight week on Monday.

Simon lead the Black Bears to a 59-48 win over Rhode Island in their only game last week. She scored 21 of her 25 points in the second half, including 15 straight points for Maine in one stretch.

Simon, the 2022 America East Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year, has scored at least 20 points in her last three games and has reached double digits in eight straight games.

The Black Bears return to action at 5:30 p.m. Friday when they face Richmond in the Vibrant Thanks Giving Classic in Des Moines, Iowa.

TOP 25: Maryland’s 13-year run in The Associated Press women’s basketball poll has come to an end after a week that saw more chaos in the Top 25.

The Terrapins had been ranked for 251 consecutive weeks – the second longest active streak behind No. 6 UConn – before falling out on Monday. Maryland had been in every poll since the start of the 2010-11 season, but lost to the Huskies by 32 on Thursday before edging Syracuse on Sunday. It was the sixth-longest run ever in the AP Top 25.

South Carolina remained the No. 1 team, becoming the unanimous choice this week. The Gamecocks earned all 36 first-place votes and now have the second-longest streak in the poll at 209 straight weeks, behind only UConn’s streak of 567 weeks.

UCLA moved up one spot to No. 2, the highest ranking in program history.

UNE 78, ANNA MARIA 52: Sydney Jenisch had 16 points as the Nor’easters (4-1) beat the Amcats (0-4) in Paxton, Massachusetts.

Faye Veilleux added 13 points and Ella Karavanic had 12 points for UNE. Jordyn Franzen added 10 points.

Gina Paramenter had 13 points for Anna Maria.

(1) SOUTH CAROLINA 78, SOUTH DAKOTA STATE 38: Kamilla Cardoso had 23 points, 10 rebounds and six blocks as South Carolina (4-0) shook off some poor shooting to rout visiting South Dakota State.

The Gamecocks played without their most reliable outside shooter in Oregon transfer Te-Hina Paopao, who was out with an ankle injury, and her absence showed.

South Carolina shot 33% (15 of 45) in the opening half, but took control with relentless rebounding and defense. The Gamecocks had 16 blocks, 15 steals and led the Jackrabbits 21-10 in offensive rebounds.

(7) LSU 106, TEXAS SOUTHERN 47: Aneesah Morrow and Flau’jae Johnson tied their season highs with 17 points apiece and host LSU (5-1) defeated Texas Southern while star forward Angel Reese missed her second straight game.

Hailey Van Lith scored a season-high 16 points for LSU, which has won five straight since its season-opening loss to then No. 20 Colorado, which has since moved up to third in the AP Top 25.

(9) VIRGINIA TECH 72, UNC GREENSBORO 51: Elizabeth Kitley scored 31 points to lead Virginia Tech (3-1) over visiting UNC Greensboro (3-2).

Kitley connected on 13 of 22 from the floor and grabbed 10 rebounds to lift the Hokies to their second consecutive win.

(15) OHIO STATE 79, EAST CAROLINA 55: Jacy Sheldon scored 20 points, Taylor Thierry had 14 points and eight rebounds, and the Buckeyes (3-1) beat the Pirates (2-2) in the Baha Mar Pink Flamingo Championship in Nassau, Bahamas.

(24) MISSISSIPPI 60, MICHIGAN 49: Marija Avlijas scored 11 points, Madison Scott added 10 points and Mississippi (5-1) beat Michigan (4-1) in the Battle 4 Atlantis championship game in Nassau, Bahamas.

Ole Miss held an opponent to fewer than 50 points for the third time this season. Since the start of the 2021-22 season, Ole Miss has held eight Power Five opponents under 50 points.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

TOP 25: Kansas’ comeback win in a marquee matchup kept the Jayhawks firmly entrenched atop The Associated Press Top 25 men’s college basketball poll while Miami climbed to its highest ranking in nearly five years.

The Jayhawks stayed at No. 1 and Miami climbed to No. 10 to replace a tumbling Florida Atlantic in the only major change at the top of the rankings.

Kansas (3-0) rallied from 14 down to beat Kentucky in last week’s Champions Classic, led by a huge game from transfer big man Hunter Dickinson in its lone game of the week. That helped the Jayhawks pick up two additional first-place votes from last week, topping 53 of 62 ballots.

(2) PURDUE 73, (11) GONZAGA 63: Zach Edey scored 15 of his game-high 25 points in the first half and Purdue (4-0) rallied to a beat Gonzaga (2-1) in a Maui Invitational quarterfinal game at Honolulu.

The Boilermakers trailed by as many as nine points late in the first half, but outscored the Bulldogs 43-28 in the second half to remain unbeaten.

(5) UCONN 81, (15) TEMPLE 71: Alex Karaban scored 20 points, including three clutch jumpers down the stretch, and UConn (5-0) turned back Texas (4-1) to win the Empire Classic at Madison Square Garden.

Cam Spencer had 16 points and Samson Johnson set career highs with 15 points and eight rebounds off the bench for the defending national champion Huskies, who have won 22 consecutive nonconference games — all by double digits.

(7) TENNESSEE 73, SYRACUSE 56: Dalton Knecht scored 17 points and Josiah-Jordan James and Jonas Aidoo each recorded a double-double to lead  Tennessee (4-0) over Syracuse (3-1) in the opening round of the Maui Invitational at Honolulu.

JP Estrella of South Portland had two points and three rebounds in nine minutes for the Vols.

(16) KENTUCKY 96, ST JOSEPH’S 88: Tre Mitchell scored nine of his season-high 22 points in overtime, leading host Kentucky (4-1) over Saint Joseph’s (3-2).

Mitchelll hit back-to-back 3-pointers to open Kentucky’s scoring in overtime, and the Wildcats outscored the Hawks 19-11 in the extra period.

WISCONSIN 65, (24) VIRGINIA 41: Steven Crowl had 15 points and 10 rebounds to lead Wisconsin (3-2) over Virginia (4-1) in the Fort Myers Tip-Off in Florida.

John Blackwell added 10 points for the Badgers, who had 30 points inside against Virginia’s vaunted defense.

Reece Beekman had 17 points to lead the Cavaliers.

MEN’S HOCKEY

TOP 25: The University of Maine fell one spot in the USCHO.com to No. 10 after being swept by No. 5 Boston University last weekend.

Maine (6-3-1, 3-2-1 in Hockey East) lost to the Terriers on 3-2 on Friday and 5-4 on Saturday.

North Dakota (9-2-1) is No. 1, followed by Boston College (9-2-1), Quinnipiac (9-3-1) and Denver (8-3-1).
