Maine has sadly joined the ranks of far too many places that have seen mass shootings. It is hugely distressing and unnerving and incredibly scary to think of our children growing up in what was once an idyllic state, but is now marred by this horrific violence.
I think everyone who lives in Maine or visits Maine can readily see what a special place it is. We are not only blessed with incredible natural beauty, but also with a populace of gritty, creative, hard-working and kind people – people who know how to come together to help neighbors and community members regardless of party affiliation. I believe Maine is uniquely positioned to bring our stubborn strength and independent minds to the forefront of remedying gun violence. I see Rep. Jared Golden’s change of heart and mind and am reminded of our state motto, “Dirigo,” meaning “I lead.”
It’s time for Mainers to lead, rethink our assumptions and be open to making changes that will keep our communities safe. The onus is on all of us to ask for and vote for commonsense gun laws.
