Lucy Johnson scored her state record-setting 112th career goal as top-ranked Cheverus advanced to the Class A South field hockey semifinals with a 3-0 victory Wednesday over eighth-seeded Massabesic in Portland.
The Stags (15-0) will play Scarborough in Saturday’s semifinals.
After a scoreless first half, Cheverus broke through when Lillian Magda scored in early in the third quarter. Later in the quarter, Magda set up freshman Sydney Brunelle for a 2-0 lead.
The Stags then iced it when Johnson put in a rebound with 6:45 to play.
Massabesic (8-7-1) got 16 saves from Lydia Suhy.
SCARBOROUGH 2, FALMOUTH 1: Maggie Pendergast converted a penalty stroke 4:50 into overtime to give the fourth-seeded Red Storm (9-6) a Class A South quarterfinal win over the fifth-seeded Navigators (8-6-1) in Scarborough.
Each team scored in the second quarter, with Laney Niles finding the net 1:27 into the quarter for Scarborough before Violet Westburg answered for Falmouth about five minutes later.
Jenna Nunley had eight saves for the Navigators, while Jamila Mohamed stopped seven shots for the Red Storm.
SPRUCE MOUNTAIN 8, WAYNFLETE 0: The top-seeded Phoenix (14-1) scored two goals in each quarter and advanced to the Class C South semifinals with a win over the Flyers (5-8) in Jay.
Spruce Mountain will host No. 4 St. Dominic (7-8) later this week.
Olivia Mastine scored in each quarter and assisted on two goals. Brooklyn Fournier added a goal and two assists.
Adell Pease, Avery Bessey and Aaylah Herrera also scored, and Mary Hamblin had an assist.
Waynflete goalie Mya Clark made 24 saves.
BOYS’ SOCCER
WINDHAM 4, SOUTH PORTLAND 0: Luke Cunniffe scored two goals to lead the top-seeded Eagles (14-0-1) over the eight-seeded Red Riots (7-6-3) in Windham.
Cunniffe converted a penalty kick 5:42 into the game and made it 3-0 with 14:28 left in the half.
Nick Marion and Connor LeClerc also scored, and Lucas Hammond stopped eight shots for his eight shutout of the season.
Michael Zaccaria made 10 saves for South Portland.
LINCOLN ACADEMY 3, FREEPORT 2: Nestor Powers scored the winning penalty kick to lift the third-seeded Eagles (11-1-3) over the sixth-seeded Falcons (7-5-3) in a Class B South quarterfinal in Newcastle.
Casey Duncan and EJ Hunt each got a first-half goal for Lincoln, who will face second-seeded Cape Elizabeth in the semifinals on Saturday.
Owen Rusieski and Gordie Frye scored for Freeport.
MT. ABRAM 4, NORTH YARMOUTH ACADEMY 0: Logan Thibodeau scored two goals and set up another, and the top-seeded Roadrunners (15-0) pulled away with three second-half goals in Class C South quarterfinal win over the No. 8 Panthers (3-12) at Salem.
Ash Rollins and Payton Mitchell also scored, and Bear Rollins got an assist. Logan Dube and Trey Reed split time in net for the Roadrunners and faced only one shot combined.
Gavin Thomas made 10 saves for NYA.
RICHMOND 9, CHOP POINT 1: Hunter Mason notched a hat trick to help the top-seeded Bobcats (14-1) beat the No. 8 Blue Bears (0-12) in a Class D South quarterfinal in Richmond.
Kenny Mecham added two goals and three assists, Wyatt Cassidy also had two goals, and Zander Steele and Brady Anderson got one each.
Simon Wilkinson scored for Chop Point.
VOLLEYBALL
YARMOUTH 3, MESSALONSKEE 2: The second-seeded Clippers (13-3) held off a strong challenge by the third-seeded Eagles (15-1), winning 15-7 in the final set in Yarmouth to advance to the Class B state championship game.
Yarmouth, the four-time reigning state champion, won the first two sets, 25-15, 25-16, before Messalonskee rallied in sets three and four, 25-20 and 25-19.
The Clippers will play undefeated No. 1 seed Washington Academy at 5:30 p.m. Friday at the University of Southern Maine.
