Middle school and high school students and K-12 teachers in SAD 75 and RSU 1 have until Oct. 31 to enter contests for Veterans of Foreign Wars scholarships and Teacher of the Year awards.
Middle school students can participate in the “Patriot’s Pen” essay contest by submitting a 300-400-word essay on the theme, “How are you inspired by America?” In the high school “Voice of Democracy” contest, students must submit a 3- to 5-minute audio essay on the theme, “What are the greatest attributes of our democracy?” Judging criteria, additional requirements and the submission form can be found at vfw.org.
One teacher for each grade level will receive the Smart/Maher National Citizenship Education Teacher Award. Teachers can nominate themselves or be nominated by coworkers, family or other interested community members. The submission calls for a resume that demonstrates the teacher’s use of innovation and passion for their profession.
