William Everett James

PORTLAND – Bill was a great father, provider and friend to many. He loved and cherished his family and friends. He passed away July 13, 2023.

Bill was born March 16, 1937. He grew up in South Portland and attended South Portland schools. After graduation, Bill served in the Marine Corps from 1957-1962 where he was a helicopter pilot. He met his wife, Sandra Green, shortly thereafter and they were married for 45 years.

He worked for the Portland Press Herald and after retiring from there he worked a part time job for Hertz until age 76.

Bill had a passion for golf, whether playing it himself or watching it on TV.

He had many friends whom he enjoyed being around, whether it was getting together at Bug Light, the casino, Willard Beach or just chatting on the phone. He was a great story teller with a sharp wit. He would start each story with (to make a long story short) which we all knew meant the story would be even longer.

Bill was predeceased by his wife, Sandra; his father, George, mother, Dorothy; and brothers Donald and Robert.

He is survived by his two daughters, Kym Devine and Sharri James; five grandchildren, Jay Devine and his partner Nichole, Brandye Devine and her husband Wes Gaines, Karri and her husband Kevin Belling, Dewey Whitten and Brent Whitten; as well as five great-grandchildren, Wyatt, Arlo, Maple, Emery and Sam.

Bill will be truly missed but never forgotten by his family and friends.

We would like to thank the team at MMC, St. Joes Rehab and the Veteran’s Home for all their great care.
