STANDISH — Jason Libby of Bangor Christian gained notoriety this baseball season with an unusual feat – a 22-strikeout no-hitter in a seven-inning game, made possible because of a mishandled third strike on one of his strikeouts.
Thursday night, Libby was in the spotlight again as the winner of the Dr. John Winkin Award, given to the top senior baseball player in Maine. The award was presented at St. Joseph’s College between the C/D and A/B senior all-star games.
Libby was both player of the year and pitcher of the year in the Class D North Penobscot Valley Conference, leading Bangor Christian to a 16-2 record. The Patriots won their first regional title since 2017 before losing to defending state champion St. Dominic in the Class D final.
Libby is the first athlete from a Class D school to win the Winkin Award since it was first awarded in 1992, something he carries with pride.
“Some people look down on us, obviously there’s a lot of talent everywhere,” Libby said about being a part of Class D. “It’s a great honor to represent my home state. I’m still trying to process it.”
Libby plans to play baseball at Southern Maine Community College.
Other finalists were Andrew Heffernan of South Portland, Carson Black of Sacopee Valley, Alex Bartlett of Oceanside, Eli Soehren of Oxford Hills, Kyle Delano of Oak Hill and Gabe Gifford of Old Town.
