South Portland voters approved a $66.1 million school budget Tuesday 598 to 273.
The budget comes with a 4.6% increase in the portion of the property tax that goes to support schools. The school tax rate goes up 45 cents, from $9.78 to $10.23 per $1,000 assessed value. The owner of a home assessed at $400,000 will pay an estimated $4,092 in school taxes in the new fiscal year, $180 more than this year. That increase comes on top of any property tax increase resulting from the city budget, which the City Council will vote on June 20.
Under 4% of South Portland’s registered voters cast ballots in the school budget validation referendum.
