The dismantling of the homeless encampment in Portland showed a profound lack of courage and common sense from our city leaders. Clearly our city is in crisis. While no one could possibly think that it is safe or ideal to have citizens camped out in a public park, removing them without any plan for their immediate future is simply irresponsible.

This crisis calls for courage and creativity. Perhaps it is time that we cut through red tape, put up temporary shelters, set up medical tents, sanitation stations and ask for emergency funding, rather than just bulldozing a community from the only homes they have. Of course sanitation and safety were a concern. They continue to be as that group of people wanders the city in search of other places to camp.

We can do better.
