Elizabeth Hamilton Fraser

GORHAM – Elizabeth Hamilton Fraser, daughter of John D. Hamilton and Margaret Stone Hamilton, passed away at the Gorham House Nursing Home, Gorham, on Saturday, Nov. 12, 2022 at the age of 98.

Elizabeth attended Clinton, Mass. schools and graduated from Wheaton College, going on to gain a Masters Degree in Physiology from Mt. Holyoke College. She married J Perry Fraser in 1947 and they had three children.

Following periods of employment as a Professor at Skidmore College and High School Teaching Assistant, Elizabeth built upon her time as a Girl Scout Troop leader through a 15 year career as a Volunteer Coordinator with the Mohawk Pathways Girl Scout Council in upstate New York. She was a lifetime member of the Girl Scouts and was briefly on the Board of the Girl Scouts of Maine.

She and her husband retired to Maine where they built a passive solar house and she was able to expand her gardening to include a large indoor solarium full of cactus and African violets, as well as an outdoor garden that included her favorite Hosta plants. Elizabeth became an active member of the Sanford Unitarian Universalist Church, where she served as President, and also as newsletter editor for many years. At the age of 91 she became an intrepid traveler, visiting Edinburgh Scotland to enjoy the Botanic Gardens, visit relatives and amaze the locals as she boarded the buses using her walker. Elizabeth lived for 16 years in the Gorham House Independent wing and appreciated being part of, and contributing to, such a caring and supportive community.

Elizabeth will best be remembered by her family and friends for her non-judgmental support at all times, sly sense of humor, and grace and strength in the face of adversity. She also supported many Maine causes that were working to help those in need.

She was predeceased by her husband of 59 years, J Perry Fraser, and brother Leland Hamilton. Survivors include her children, F Jean Fraser Small, Alan H. Fraser, and Barbara S. Fraser, daughter-in-law Susan E. Fraser, sons-in-law Christian Small and Timothy DeCoteau; three grandchildren Gregory Fraser, Jeffrey Fraser and Sabrina Small; a great-granddaughter Violet Fraser; and one niece and a number of cousins.

A Memorial Service will be arranged in the New Year. Condolences may be expressed at http://www.blackfuneralhomes.com.
