Fifth-ranked Cheverus got goals from four different players and broke open a close game with goals late in the first half and early in the second as it advanced to the Class A South girls’ soccer quarterfinals with a 4-0 win Friday against 12th-seeded Kennebunk, in Portland.
The Stags (11-4) next face No. 4 Marshwood on Wednesday.
Cheverus went ahead in the seventh minute when Jillian Foley scored off a corner kick.
It appeared the Rams (3-10-2) would only be down by one goal heading into halftime, but Annie Vigue set up Jaelyn Jensen for a header with just five seconds remaining.
The Stags then made it 3-0 just 90 seconds into the second half, as Finley Brown headed home Rachel LaSalle’s corner kick.
Vigue accounted for the final goal, off a feed from Brown, midway through the second half.
Isabella Crowe stopped 14 shots for Kennebunk, which didn’t put a shot on frame.
THORNTON ACADEMY 4, NOBLE 0: Renee Gonneville, Kayleigh Corriveau, Jessica Dow and Elle Jowett scored as the sixth-seed Trojans (10-4-1) beat the 11th-seeded Knights (5-10) in a Class A South prelim in Saco.
Hadley Stoddard added three assists for Thornton, which advances to the quarterfinals Tuesday against No. 3 Windham.
Gonneville and Corriveau connected in a 90-second span late in the first half. Dow made it 3-0 just 3:53 into the second half, and Jowett got the final goal nine minutes later.
FALMOUTH 3, BONNY EAGLE 0: Mackenzie VerLee, Gwenyth Long and Abbie Ford scored for the seventh-seeded Navigators (9-6) against the 10th-seeded Scots (5-10) in a Class A prelim in Falmouth.
TRAIP ACADEMY 8, MADISON 0: Keira Alessi scored three times in the first half as the eighth-seeded Rangers (7-8) built a 5-0 cushion against the No. 9 Bulldogs (7-8) in a Class C South prelim at Kittery.
Noel Denholm added a goal and three assists. Avery Bouchard, Meredith McGonigle, Quin McPherson and Santa Sawicki also scored to help Traip advance to the quarterfinals Tuesday against No. 1 Hall-Dale.
Allison Tuscan made 11 saves for Madison.
FIELD HOCKEY
GORHAM 5, SANFORD 1: Abby Chamberlin scored with an assist from Ellie Szostalo after 59 seconds, and the seventh-seeded Rams (9-5-1) went on to defeat the 10th-seeded Spartans (5-9-1) in a Class A South prelim at Gorham.
Gorham, which next faces No. 2 Biddeford in the quarterfinals, added two goals in the second quarter, by Natalie Miner with an assist from Annie Cunningham, and Annabelle Collier off a corner from Julia Wareham.
Hannah Bickford converted a penalty stroke in the third quarter, and Emerson Homa made it 5-0 from with 2:04 remaining, assisted by Emily Fadrigon.
Natalie Payeur scored for Sanford in the final minute.
Sanford’s Megan Sheppard and Gorham’s Madison Tibbals each had eight saves.
FALMOUTH 2, MARSHWOOD 1: Allison Sweetser scored on Falmouth’s first attempt in penalty corners and the eighth-seeded Navigators (8-6-1) advanced to the Class A South quarterfinals by defeating the ninth-seeded Hawks (6-8-1) in a prelim at Falmouth.
After Reese Forrester opened the scoring for Marshwood early in the third quarter, Anna Turgeon tied it with 12:25 to play in regulation.
Defensive back Macy Bush cleared away Marshwood’s first attempt after the game went to penalty corners.
