LYNCHBURG, Tenn. — A bounty hunter trying to detain Randy Howard, a country musician wanted on a DUI charge, shot and killed the 65-year-old man in a gunfight at the singer’s home, authorities said Thursday.

Howard had played with Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings.

Howard had been charged with fourth-offense DUI, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of a firearm while intoxicated, and driving on a revoked license, authorities said. But after Howard missed a court appearance, bounty hunter Jackie Shell showed up at his home to take him into custody and a gunfight ensued, authorities said. Shell reportedly was wounded and underwent surgery.
