PGA: Equipped with his first PGA Tour lead in 67 starts, Morgan Hoffmann played like he wanted to keep it in the Arnold Palmer Invitational.

Hoffmann made birdies on half of his holes for a 7-under 65, giving him a three-shot lead over Henrik Stenson, Harris English and defending champion Matt Every going into the weekend at Orlando, Florida.

Stenson, English and Every each had a 66.

Rory McIlroy also got into the mix – finally – by making five straight birdies on his back nine for a 66, his first sub-70 score in three PGA Tour events this year. He was five shots behind.

LPGA: Ha Na Jang topped the crowded leaderboard when darkness ended play at the JTBC Founders Cup at Phoenix.

Jang birdied her final four holes to reach 11 under with seven holes left in the second round. Fellow South Korean Hyo Joo Kim was a stroke back.

TENNIS

BNP PARIBAS OPEN: Roger Federer defeated Tomas Berdych 6-4, 6-0 and Milos Raonic outlasted Rafael Nadal 4-6, 7-6 (10), 7-5 in a nearly three-hour marathon to set up a semifinal showdown at Indian Wells, California.

On the women’s side, Serena Williams withdrew from her semifinal because of a right knee injury.

SOCCER

ENGLAND: The quarterfinals of the European cup competitions will have a glaring omission.

For the first time in 22 years, England is not represented in the final eight of the continental tournaments.

Consider that five-time European champion Liverpool, which exited the Champions League at the group stage, was then ousted from the Europa League after being demoted to the second-tier competition.

No English team advanced from the first knockout stage of the Champions League either, with Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester City eliminated in the round of 16.

To compound the state of affairs, England this summer suffered its worst-ever World Cup last year – a group-stage exit with one point.

SKIING

WORLD CUP: Switzerland’s combined times gave it the edge over Sweden in the team event at the finals in Meribel, France.

With each team winning two slalom races in the final, Switzerland ended up on top by .09 seconds when the overall times were added up.
