BANGOR — A Maine school board member was arrested Friday on charges of harassing and stalking a woman he once dated, police said.
John David Hiatt, a 38-year-old member of the Bangor School Board, was accused of using his cellphone and computer to target the woman, whom he dated in 2017 and 2018, police said.
The woman took out a protection order on Nov. 13, 2018, less than a week after he was elected as a Republican to serve as county treasurer and on the school board, the Bangor Daily News reported.
Hiatt, who has been open about the difficulties of being an elected official with autism, also recently took out a protection order against the woman. He wrote that he was fearful the courts would be used “in an attempt to embarrass and get the plaintiff fired.”
He is charged with aggravated invasion of computer privacy, stalking, theft by unauthorized taking and harassment.
Bail was set at $5,000 for Hiatt, who didn’t immediately return an email message. It was not immediately known if he had a lawyer.
