WELLS — A 33-year old Old Orchard Beach woman was charged with felony drug trafficking after Maine drug agents found a half pound of what they believe to be fentanyl in her car.
Maine Drug Enforcement Agency Commander Scott Pelletier said agents had been investigating Cassandra Gasbarro, whom they suspected of selling fentanyl throughout York County.
On the evening of April 20, agents saw Gasbarro returning to Maine from Massachusetts. Pelletier said State Police troopers stopped her vehicle and seized it pending issuance of a search warrant, and Gasbarro was released.
Pelletier said Gasbarro would routinely travel out of state where, drug agents alleged, she bought large amounts of fentanyl at reduced prices, and then came back to Maine to sell it.
On April 21, warrant in hand, police searched the car and found 265 grams, or eight ounces, of what they believe to be fentanyl. Police estimated the street value of the drug at $45,000.
Drug agents secured a warrant for Gasbarro’s arrest that day; Wells Police found her and took her into custody, Pelletier said.
She is charged with Class A felony aggravated trafficking in scheduled drugs.
Gasbarro was taken to York County Jail in Alfred, where she remained on Thursday, April 22, held in lieu of $10,000 cash bail. She was to make her first court appearance the following day.
“The investigation is ongoing,” said Pelletier. “Additional charges and arrests are expected.”
