BOYS
Ben Adey, Waynflete senior: A multi-talented athlete (soccer, Alpine skiing) who is also playing lacrosse this spring, Adey reached the quarterfinals of the singles state tournament as an unseeded sophomore. In team play he went 11-3 at No. 2 singles to help the Flyers win their 12th straight Class C crown.
Leif Boddie, Greely junior: In his first year of high school competition, Boddie led a Greely turnaround by going 12-2 in team matches as the Rangers reached the Class B South semifinals. He drew the fifth seed in the singles state tournament and advanced to the quarterfinals. An arm injury may hamper his start this spring.
George Cutone, Kennebunk freshman: New on the high school scene, Cutone is a veteran of USTA tournaments and a legitimate contender for the singles state title. Kennebunk Coach Paul Gaylord said Cutone has an all-court game that includes volleys, overheads and serves as well as precision ground strokes.
Aidan Kieffer, Waynflete senior: As a freshman, Kieffer teamed with Adey to win the Western Maine Conference doubles title and then missed his sophomore season because of a disc injury in his back. He now moves up to No. 2 singles to give the Flyers a formidable 1-2 punch at the top of their lineup.
Ezra LeMole, Camden Hills junior: LeMole returns at No. 1 singles for the Windjammers, who are seeking their first state championship in Class A after winning the second of two Class B titles in 2017. As the eighth seed in the Class A 2019 singles state tournament, LeMole stumbled in the Round of 32.
Bryce Poulin, North Yarmouth Academy junior: A rangy three-sport athlete who also plays basketball and golf, Poulin possesses a powerful serve and driving ground strokes. He went 10-4 as a freshman in singles and moves up to No. 1 this year for the Panthers.
GIRLS
Caitlin Cass, Lincoln Academy senior: A quarterfinalist as the third seed in the 2019 singles state tournament, Cass went 15-1 in team play to lead the Eagles to a second straight Class B title. In her first year, she reached the singles semifinals as the sixth seed.
Abby Emerson, Gorham junior: Emerson moves up one slot to No. 1 singles for the Rams, who reached the Class A South semifinals her freshman year. Coach Nicole Bergeron sees plenty of growth, describing Emerson as highly competitive and hungry, with a range of abilities to deal with different styles of play.
Blair Hollyday, Cape Elizabeth senior: Hollyday was unbeaten in team play at the top of Cape Elizabeth’s lineup in 2019. Seeded ninth in the singles state tournament, she advanced to the quarterfinals before losing to eventual champ Grace Campanella of Kennebunk/Wells. Hollyday plans to continue her career at Trinity College.
Sofia Mavor, Yarmouth freshman: Mavor is active on the USTA circuit and has New England and national rankings. She has a sophisticated understanding of the game, said Clippers Coach Bill Shardlow. Older sister Lana won the 2017 singles state title and now plays for North Carolina State, as did their father, Brian.
Coco Meserve, Brunswick freshman: Also new to high school competition, Meserve plays with plenty of topspin and keeps the ball deep. She’s not averse to charging the net and is adept at putting away short balls. Like Mavor, Meserve is active on the USTA circuit and ranked highly in the region.
Morgan Warner, Waynflete senior: After playing lacrosse her first year, Warner transitioned to tennis as a sophomore and was unbeaten in 14 matches to lead the Flyers to the Class C South finals. She reached the semifinal round of the state singles tournament as the sixth seed.
