NEWPORT, R.I. — Kate Wilmot had two hits and four RBI as the University of New England beat Salve Regina 7-3 Wednesday for a split in its season-opening softball doubleheader.
Salve Regina won the opener 4-0 as Nikki Vanelli had two RBI. Maddie Capetta added an RBI and another run scored on an error.
Megan Chamberlain and Makenzy Herron had RBI in the second game for the Nor’easters.
MEN’S LACROSSE
WESTERN NEW ENGLAND 15, U. OF NEW ENGLAND 2: Mike Bannon and Brendan Lyons each had three goals as the Golden Bears (4-1, 2-1 CCC) beat the Nor’easters (0-2, 0-2) at Biddeford.
Dylan Hanley and Connor Tracey scored two goals a piece for Western New England. Nick Gamba had a goal and four assists.
Alden Balboni and Kyle Kennedy scored for UNE.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
RUTGERS: Hall of Fame coach C. Vivian Stringer has agreed to a five-year contract extension that will keep her at Rutgers through the 2025-26 season.
Stringer, 73, has led the Scarlet Knights to a top-three finish in the conference in two of the past three seasons, and a pair of NCAA Tournament appearances.
The contract guarantees compensation of $5.5 million, beginning at $1 million in the first year, plus performance incentives and retention bonuses. Stringer, who signed a four-year extension before the 2017-18 season, will enter her 27th season at Rutgers.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
ARIZONA: Arizona has hired longtime Gonzaga assistant Tommy Lloyd as its next men’s basketball coach.
The school said Lloyd will receive a five-year contract, pending approval by the Arizona Board of Regents.
Lloyd replaces Sean Miller, who was fired after 12 years on April 7 amid an NCAA infractions investigation.
UTEP: Joe Golding has been named the new coach after a decade at Abilene Christian that included an upset victory for the Wildcats in the first round of this season’s NCAA Tournament.
Golding replaces Rodney Terry, who left after three seasons to become an assistant at Texas under new Longhorns coach Chris Beard, who left Texas Tech.
The 45-year-old Golding was 158-144 during his 10 seasons as head coach of his alma mater, guiding Abilene Christian’s transition from NCAA Division II to Division I and the last two NCAA tournaments. The Wildcats were 71-23 overall during the past three seasons, including 24-5 this season.
SETON HALL: South Florida forward Alexis Yetna is headed to Seton Hall as a graduate transfer.
The 6-foot-8 Yetna, a native of France, spent the last four years at USF, where he will earn his bachelor’s degree later this semester.
Yetna averaged 12.3 points and 9.6 rebounds while shooting 54% from the field and 37% from 3-point range as a redshirt freshman in 2018-19. He finished that season with the most rebounds by a South Florida and American Athletic Conference freshman, and second-most in school history.
After missing the following season due to injury, Yetna returned to the court this past season and was averaging 10.5 points and 7.6 rebounds on Jan. 10 when the Bulls had to go on pause due to COVID-19. He finished the season with averages of 9.5 points and 7.3 rebounds.
ARKANSAS: Arkansas announced it has signed Coach Eric Musselman to a new, five-year agreement that could keep him with the Razorbacks through the 2028 season.
LOUISVILLE: Guard David Johnson will enter the NBA draft and forego his final two seasons of eligibility after being one of the team’s most productive players the past two years.
The 6-foot-5 Louisville native averaged 12.6 points, 5.8 rebounds and 3.2 assists in 19 games as a sophomore and was an All-Atlantic Coast Conference honorable mention.
Johnson was the Cardinals’ No. 2 scorer but made a team-high 32 3-pointers on nearly 39% shooting from behind the arc.
UCONN: Swingman Tyler Polley plans to take advantage of an extra year of eligibility and return to the school but will put his name into the NBA draft pool for evaluation purposes.
The decision will allow the 3-point specialist to continue exploring his professional options and receive feedback from pro scouts.
The 6-foot-9 senior averaged 7.5 points and two rebounds this past season and was named the Big East’s Sixth Man of the Year.
MICHIGAN: Guard Eli Brooks is returning for a fifth season with the Wolverines.
The team announced on Twitter that Brooks has accepted the chance to play an additional year, which the NCAA is allowing because of the coronavirus pandemic.
