Cheverus used a stifling zone defense to upset Portland 55-44 on Saturday at the Portland Expo, snapping the Bulldogs’ 37-game winning streak.

Portland dropped to 15-1 while Cheverus improved to 10-6.

The 44 points were the fewest scored this season by the defending Class A state champions.

“Good defense,” Cheverus Coach Dan Costigan said. “We battled every possession and you have to do that against Portland.”

Cheverus guard Luca Napolitano led all scorers with 15, including four 3-pointers. Six-foot-5 post player Zordan Holman added 12 points while providing a presence underneath, and Jack Casale and Jesse Matthews each scored nine.

Portland’s press occasionally gave Cheverus trouble, but Stags guards Austin Boudreau and Derek Hammond usually moved the ball up cleanly.

Cheverus opened the game with a 13-0 run and never trailed. The Stags led 15-7 after the first quarter and 30-21 at halftime.

Guard Stephen Alex led Portland with 11 points.

BONNY EAGLE 44, WESTBROOK 34: Ben Malloy scored his 1,000th career point, and finished with 20 points and 10 rebounds for the Scots (10-6) in a win over the Blue Blazes (7-9) at Standish.

Malloy reached 1,000 points with a free throw in the second quarter.

Nick Dubay added 13 points for Bonny Eagle. Derrick Breunig led Westbrook with 11.

SOUTH PORTLAND 71, DEERING 66: The Red Riots (13-3) used an 18-8 outburst in the third quarter to rally past the Rams (11-5) at South Portland.

Jaren Muller led four players in double figures for South Portland with 18 points. Jack Fiorini scored 16 points, Kam Harper tossed in 12 and Sam Depaolo added 11.

Malik White scored 24 points and Garang Majok had 19 for Deering.

SCARBOROUGH 52, SANFORD 44: Sam Freeman made seven 3-pointers and finished with 27 points, and the Red Storm (8-9) used a strong third quarter to pull away from the Spartans (5-10) at Sanford.

Milani Hicks added 12 points for Scarborough, which outscored Sanford 18-4 in the third quarter to erase a three-point halftime deficit.

Sanford was led by Brad Bouchard with nine points, all on 3-pointers.

THORNTON ACADEMY 75, MASSABESIC 52: Kevin Barrett scored 21 points to lead five players in double digits as the Trojans (7-9) handled the Mustangs (1-15) at Waterboro.

Ben Lambert scored 17 points, while John Fogg, Corey Hart and Rome Pura tossed in 10 points each.

Daniel Amabile led Massabesic with 24 points.

YARMOUTH 87, LAKE REGION 55: The Clippers (13-3) made seven 3-pointers in the first quarter and rolled past the Lakers (11-5) at Yarmouth.

Cody Cook scored 17 points, and Jordan Brown and Adam LaBrie each added 16 for Yarmouth, which led 27-11 after one quarter and 50-20 at halftime.

The Lakers were led by Jack Lesure with 15 points.

KENNEBUNK 49, GRAY-NEW GLOUCESTER 44: Zach MacKinnon scored 18 points, including four free throws in the final 30 seconds, to help the Rams (5-11) defeat the Patriots (7-9) at Gray.

Jack Lapham and Travon Bradford helped out with 12 points apiece.

Andreas Kariotis led the Patriots with 13 points.

POLAND 53, WELLS 46: Derek Michaud scored all of his 14 points in the fourth quarter as the Knights (7-9) rallied past the Warriors (2-14) at Wells.

Alan Young added 12 points and John Fossett scored 10 for Poland, which trailed 33-29 after three quarters.

Owen Berry led Wells with 18 points.

CAPE ELIZABETH 61, GREELY 41: Jack O’Rourke made five 3-pointers and finished with 19 points for the Capers (13-2), who used a 20-5 second-quarter run to pull away from the Rangers (7-8) at Cumberland.

Greely was led by Gabe Axelson with 10 points.

WAYNFLETE 76, SACOPEE VALLEY 25: Milo Belleau scored 21 points to pace Waynflete (13-1) against Sacopee Valley (5-10) at Portland.

The Flyers raced to a 40-15 lead by halftime. Harry Baker-Connick added 12 points and Tommy Silk scored 11.

TRAIP ACADEMY 76, NORTH YARMOUTH ACADEMY 34: Dan Tokarz scored 10 of his 19 points in the first quarter as the Rangers (7-8) opened with a 25-7 run and cruised past the Panthers (7-9) at Kittery.

Alex Foye added 14 points, and Justin Boreman, Colin Macomber and Josh Schneier scored eight apiece.

NYA was led by Jake Malcom with nine points.

OLD ORCHARD BEACH 52, HYDE 38: Evan Christensen and Bryan Roberts each scored six points in the fourth quarter as the Seagulls (9-7) pulled away from the Phoenix (13-2) at Old Orchard Beach.

Roberts finished with 13 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, Zac Hirst tossed in 11 points, and Eric Hogan contributed 10. The Seagulls outscored Hyde 24-13 in the fourth quarter.

Antoine Montgomery led Hyde with 14 points. Andrew Palermo added 12.

BRUNSWICK 59, SKOWHEGAN 40: Alex Bandouveres scored 16 points for Brunswick (7-8) in a win over the Indians (4-11) at Skowhegan.

The Dragons took control early, outscoring Skowhegan 23-8 in the first quarter as Thomas Hanson put in seven of his 11 points.

MEDOMAK VALLEY 61, LINCOLN ACADEMY 45: Nicholas DePatsy led the Panthers (14-2) with 20 points and 10 rebounds in a win over the Eagles (10-6) at Waldoboro.

Cody Tozier scored 20 points for Lincoln.

RANGELEY 45, RICHMOND 40: Timmy White scored 25 points to lead the Lakers (5-10) over the Bobcats (9-5) in Rangeley.

YARMOUTH 2, GORHAM 1: Sam Rouda scored midway through the third period as the Clippers (5-7) edged the Rams (9-3-1) at Travis Roy Ice Arena.

Gorham took the lead 5:03 into the game when Jordan Ward scored.

Patrick Grant got the equalizer for the Clippers with 1:27 left in the second period.

Nick Allen made 32 saves to earn the win.

SCARBOROUGH 2, CAPE ELIZABETH 1: Sean McGovern scored 2:55 into overtime to give the Red Storm (8-4-2) a win over the Capers (7-7) in Auburn.

Skylar Pettingill gave Scarborough a 1-0 lead 10:20 into the first period.

GRAY-NEW GLOUCESTER/POLAND/OAK HILL 4, WESTBROOK 0: Ethan Cailler scored two goals as the 26ers (5-6) shut out the Blue Blazes (0-11-1) in Auburn.

The 26ers took a 1-0 lead in the second period, then got three goals in the first four minutes of the third.

Westbrook goalie Alex Le-Blanc made 50 saves.

CHEVERUS 10, LAKE REGION/FRYEBURG/OXFORD HILLS 0: Nic Noyes and Keegan Thomas each tallied a pair of goals as the Stags (9-3-1) beat the Ice Cats (5-6) at Portland.

NOBLE/WELLS 7, MARSHWOOD/TRAIP 2: Dean Pratt had three goals and two assists, and Ryan Marsh contributed two goals to lead Noble/Wells (8-3) over Marshwood/Traip (3-9) at Rochester, New Hampshire.

LAWRENCE/SKOWHEGAN 7, PORTLAND/DEERING 0: The Bandits (7-5-1) picked up their sixth straight win with a victory over the Bulldogs (5-9) at Sukee Arena.

Trey Michonski led Lawrence/Skowhegan with three goals and two assists, while Cody Martin had two goals and two assists. Curtis Martin earned the shutout with 19 saves.

Alex Girsch finished with 27 saves for Portland/Deering.

WATERVILLE 3, HAMPDEN ACADEMY 2: Dalton Henderson scored a pair of goals and assisted on another to help pace the Purple Panthers (8-4) to a win over the Broncos (6-8).

Andrew Rodrigue also scored for Waterville, and Nathan Pinnette made 11 saves.

Hampden’s Dylan Cray recorded a goal and an assist.
