SIDNEY— A bedroom candle propped up on a jewelry stand was the cause of a fire at a day care in Sidney on Wednesday, according to the Sidney fire chief.
“It either burned through the glass and cracked it or somehow tipped over,” said Fire Chief Richard Jandreau.
There were no injuries reported in the midday fire at Jen’s Day Care on Reynolds Hill Road, but the building was destroyed, he said. The licensed home day care was also the home of owner Jennifer Brunelle, her husband and three children, said Jandreau.
The day care had been open for several years and was in good standing with the Department of Health and Human Services, according to department spokesman John Martins.
The family is staying at a hotel provided by the American Red Cross.
There were four children at the daycare at the time of the fire. They all got out of the building safely and were picked up by their parents, Jandreau said.
There will be no charges in the case.
