TOPSHAM
The following is a list of programs and events that will take place at Topsham Public Library during the months of May.
• Sip n’ Stitch, May 6 and 20, 10 a.m. to noon. A knitting and crocheting group that meets on the first and third Saturday of the month. All abilities are welcome. Come and work on a project, share patterns and relax with a cup of coffee or tea.
• Joy of the Lens Photographers’ Talk, May 6, 11 a.m.: Meet in the Crooker Gallery as the library announces the winners of this year’s People’s Choice Award and the Friends’ Photo Lottery. The winning artists in all categories will talk about their work.
• Sagadahoc Lawmakers State Budget Forum, May 6, 1:30-3:30 p.m.: Sagadahoc County’s Democratic state legislators will hold a public forum on the Opportunity Agenda, the Democratic budget proposal for 2018 and 2019. The event will be hosted by Senator Eloise Vitelli, Representative Denise Tepler, Representative Seth Berry, and Representative Jay McCreight. Lawmakers will make brief presentations and then answer questions from the audience. The public is welcome to attend.
• Moving On Discussion Group, May 9 and 23, 10 a.m.: An interactive discussion group for surviving spouses of retirement age. Share observations, experiences and ideas. Meeting on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month.
• Topsham Historical Society: The Shipyards of Bath, May 9, 6:30 p.m.: Frederic B. Hill will speak on the local history of the Bath shipyards with emphasis on a prominent Topsham resident, Wildes Walker. Walker played a major role in the shipyard’s downfall, and is the subject of Hill’s book “Ships, Swindlers, and Scalded Hogs.” Copies of the books will be available for sale after the presentation.
• Tween Reads, May 10, 5 p.m.: 6th, 7th and 8th Graders meet once a month to discuss books and eat pizza. This month’s book is “The Limit” by Kristen Landon. Pick one up at the library.
• Nature Speaks Book Discussion, May 11, 4 p.m.: Join Dana Cary for this discussion group that focuses on environmental issues and what can be done on a local level.
• Downeast Soaring Club: An Introduction to Radio Controlled Model Aircraft, May 13, 1 p.m.: Learn about the hobby of radio controlled model aircraft. Introduction will include videos, presentations, Q & A and many type of models displayed including gliders, drones, helicopters, and many types of fixed wing aircraft. Presenters will be from the Downeast Soaring Club and the Brunswick Area Modelers.
• Rare Reads Book Group, May 16, 2 p.m. or 6 p.m.: A book group that discusses unusual and interesting popular fiction that meets on the third Tuesday of every month. Email emma@topshamlibrary.org for more details. This month’s book is “Station Eleven” by Emily St. John Mandel.
• Men’s Book Group, May 18, 4 p.m.: This month’s book is “A Stranger in the Kingdom” by Howard Frank Mosher. New members welcome.
• 3rd Saturday Teen Crafting, May 20, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.: Stop by the YA room on the third Saturday of each month for a casual teen crafts program. Each month will have a different craft project, spend as little or as much time as you like. No registration required. Ages 11-18 only. This month’s craft is Canvas String Art.
• West Garden Patio Opening Tea, May 20, 1-2:30 p.m.: Honor Ruth Bouchard Klein’s major gift and the Bouchard family’s memorial benches and container garden. Refreshments will be served.
• Mystery Readers Roundtable, May 23, 3-4 p.m.: Once a month, fans of the mystery genre gather over hot drinks and share their favorite crime novels and good company. This month’s book is “Blanche on the Lam” by Barbara Neely.
• Reading Between the Panels, May 23, 6 p.m.: Join Adrien and Dale each month as they discuss all things graphic novel. From classic comic book collections to the latest in graphic novels, share favorites, make recommendations, and talk shop about the writing, the art, and everything in between. Every fourth Tuesday from October to May.
• Great Books, May 27, 10 a.m. to noon: Great Books meets monthly on the fourth Saturday, using The Great Books Foundation Short Story Omnibus, which can be purchased from the Great Books Foundation.
• Kids’ Drop-in activities, May 27, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.: Various activities will be set up in the children’s section. Activities may include art projects, sensory activities and more.
• Library Legos, May 27, 1-3 p.m.: Regular Legos are open to children ages 7-13, large Duplo blocks will be available in the children’s area for younger kids.
• CREA: Inspired by Nature, May 30, 6 p.m.: The Cathance River Preserve will educate students, educators, and the public on topics of nature.
• Artist Talk, May 31, 6 p.m.: Join Ed McCartan for an Artist Talk. He will discuss his inspiration and methods for his exhibit “Paintings Big and Bold,” in the Highlands Room at Topsham Public Library from May 11 – June 4.
