Maine State Music Theatre closes out its 2017 season with “Newsies,” featuring a score by eight-time Academy Award winner Alan Menken, from Aug. 9- 26.
Set in New York City at the turn of the century, “Newsies” is the tale of Jack Kelly, a newsboy and leader of a band of teenaged “newsies” who dreams of a better life far from the hardship of the streets. Inspired by the real-life Newsboy Strike of 1899, when newsboy Kid Blink led a band of orphan and runaway newsies on a two-week-long action against newspaper publishers, this fictionalized adaptation addresses themes of social injustice, exploitative labor practices, and David-versus-Goliath struggles as the teens learn to harness their power against a corrupt establishment.
The production stars Matt Farcher as Jack Kelly, Kate Fahrner as Katherine, Blake Stadnik as Crutchie, Justin Schuman as Davey, Timothy Woodward, Jr. as Les, Brian Sutherland as Joseph Pulitzer and Angela Grovey as Medda Larkin.
All of MSMT’s performances take place at the Pickard Theater on the campus of Bowdoin College located at 1 Bath Road in Brunswick. For more information or to buy tickets, visit www.msmt.org or call the Box Office at (207) 725- 8769.
