DAMARISCOTTA
The final Damariscotta-Newcastle Art Walk of 2017 takes place Friday from 4-7 p.m., and local galleries, studios, craft stores, restaurants and more will have their doors open for shopping and browsing.
The Damariscotta-Newcastle Art Walk is a free, self-guided event held on the third Friday of the months of June through September. In addition to a variety of visual-art mediums, some venues will offer music and others will offer light snacks and drinks. The event aims to increase community awareness of diverse local art and foster the creative economy.
The art walk has been organized by an informal coalition of art connoisseurs, business owners and nonprofit leaders, and has an eclectic range of participants. The villages invite the local community and visitors to enjoy the galleries, artists and artisans, musicians, specialty shops, and restaurants, as well as views of the Damariscotta River.
Among the 19 locations open this year, participants include The Lincoln Home, Newcastle Realty, Gifts at 136, Damariscotta River Grill, Legacy Properties Sotheby’s International Realty, Studio Roz, Savory Maine Dining & Provisions, The Stable Gallery, Kefauver Studio & Gallery, Jan Kilburn Gallery, The Sinclair Gallery, Kathleen Horst Studio Gallery, Pemaquid Watershed Association, River Arts Gallery, Stars and Milling Around.
New this year at Damariscotta River Distribution Raw Bar, across from Milling Around and the Damariscotta Region Chamber of Commerce, will be several tents of art. In September, the artists there will include: representative art from the four Bristol Road Galleries; Susan Bartlett Rice, painter; and Susie Stevenson, fiber artist. Skidompha Secondhand Book Shop will be open, with artists’ works scattered throughout the shop including
Carol Wiley, Roberta Goschke and Kim Hetherington. Also new this year will be several artists showing at the Twin Villages Church, 15 Courtyard St., Damariscotta-above Salt Bay Cafe, across from Best Thai.
There will be a special musical outreach treat this month on Theater Street with the Yellow Barn Music Haul: Music No Boundaries program, visiting from Putney, Vermont.
There are poster/maps in stores throughout the Twin Villages of Damariscotta and Newcastle and brochures with smaller maps and listings of participants for quick reference and visits beyond ArtWalk nights. Look for the yellow flags that denote an ArtWalk participant.
