The Monmouth Community Players will present Neil Simon’s comedy “Barefoot in the Park” This production is directed by Ray Fletcher of Monmouth. Cindy Dunham of Winthrop is the producer.
Paul and Corie Bratter (Danny Gay of Lewiston and Megan Record of Monmouth) are newlyweds in every sense of the word. He is a straight-as-an-arrow lawyer and she is a free spirit always searching for the newest trend. Team this relationship with an overpriced and under-performing New York apartment, a nosy mother-in-law (Charlotte Morin of Lewiston), an eccentric “upstairs” neighbor (Charlie Cole of Portland), a funny telephone company man (Tim MacLeod of Auburn), and a delivery man (David Marshall of Monmouth), and you have “Barefoot in the Park.”
Also along for the ride are some of Neil Simon’s funniest jokes and gags, perfectly meted-out over the course of the evening so that even 53 years later everything feels fresh and funny.
“Barefoot in the Park” premiered on Broadway in 1963 and ran for more than 1,500 performances, a record run for a non-musical play.
It was adapted into a movie starring Robert Redford and Jane Fonda.
The comedy, written as a tribute to Simon’s first wife, focuses on the attractions between opposites and the steep learning curve in the early days of any marriage.
“Barefoot in the Park” is appropriate for teen and adult audiences.
“Barefoot in the Park” opens at Cumston Hall on Friday and continues evening performances at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday and Nov. 10 and 11. Matinee performances will be presented at 2 p.m. On Sunday and Nov. 12. Tickets are $14 for General Admission and $12 for Students and Seniors.
