He was born in Cundy’s Harbor, September 27, 1933 the son of Dana W. and Bertha E. Toothaker York.
He grew up and attended school in Bath, graduating from Morse High School, Class of 1951. As a young boy, he enjoyed summering at the family cottage in Cundy’s Harbor.
He married Martha L. Drake of Cundy’s Harbor March 29, 1968 and spent many loving years together.
After high school he worked in Connecticut at Pratt and Whitney and later at Bath Iron Works as welder. He was employed as a foreman at Stuart Construction in Cundy’s Harbor for many years before starting his own business, Anchor Welding which he was actively operating until he became ill.
Mr. York was well known for his craftsmanship and talent. He was a gifted steel and aluminum welder specializing in custom boat ramps throughout the Mid Coast area. He took much pride in his work and enjoyed the many friends that visited him on a daily basis at his shop.
He enjoyed hunting at The Fork’s, camping, country music, bluegrass music and festivals, dancing, boating, reading western novels, doing crossword puzzles, playing Bingo and spending time with his family and friends.
He was a life member of Polar Star Lodge, A.F. & A.M. #114 of Bath, he belonged to the Valley of Portland and also was an active member of the Supreme Council of the Scottish Rite Masons, Kora Temple Shrine, past Vice President of Cranberry Horn Cemetery Association and volunteered many years at the Cundy’s Harbor Community Hall Bingo.
He is predeceased by his parents and a son, Harmon Dana York, Jr. who passed away April 1, 1970 and a grandson Aaron Dana Young who passed away May 10, 1990.
Besides his loving wife and best friend, he is survived by two sons, Barry D. York and daughter in law, Sara of Greenville and Steven H. York and daughter in law, Lori of Litchfield; two daughters, Paula L Colby and son in law, Stanley of Richmond and Kristin Y. Casey and son in law, Shawn of Brunswick; his sister, Jeanette Burton of Bath; mother in law, Polly B. Toothaker of Cundy’s Harbor, his grandson, Kyle L. Young and wife, Erika of Cundy’s Harbor; five granddaughters, Abbie L. Young, Ashley A. York and Kristin M. York all of Cundy’s Harbor, Lauryn M. Casey and Lyla M. Casey both of Brunswick; four nieces, a nephew and several great nieces and nephews and cousins.
Friends may visit Thursday, February 2, 2012 from 6-8 p.m. at the Brackett Funeral Home 29 Federal Street, Brunswick where a Masonic Ritualistic will be held at 7 pm. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home with The Rev. Ron McLaughlin officiating. Interment will be in Cranberry Horn Cemetery, Cundy’s Harbor.
