Peter was born in Rice Lake, WI, on June 8, 1946, the son of Edwin Bucholdt and the late Carnette ( Taylor) Bucholdt of Gordon, WI.
Peter graduated from Minong High School in 1964, and once the fishing and hunting seasons were complete, Peter joined the U.S. Navy in February 1965. He then served during the Vietnam Conflict aboard the USS Roosevelt.
During a break in service, Peter worked for Boeing Aircraft in WA State and White Pine Copper Mine in the UP of MI. He later rejoined the U. S. Navy in April of 1972, and retired from the Brunswick Naval Air Station (MAU Squadron) on February 29, 1988. During his time of service he was stationed at Willow Grove, PA, Selfridge Air National Guard Base, MI and Pt. Magu, CA before coming to Maine.
Peter was an avid sportsman and once he retired he was able to enjoy the beautiful State of Maine which included a 108 day stretch tenting and fishing at an undisclosed location in Northern Maine. This was then immediately followed by an extended hunting trip. Due to his expertise in hunting, Peter participated in 14 moose hunting trips, of which two he was the primary permittee. He was also the subpermittee on his daughter Melissa’s moose hunting trip as well as his wife Nancy’s.
Peter was known for his charismatic personality and his willingness to help and care for others.
Peter is survived by his loving wife, Nancy (Kamarainen) Bucholdt of 43 years, son Grant Jack Bucholdt of Raymond, ME, daughter Melissa Emily (Bucholdt) Martin with grandchildren Taylor Elaine and Steven James Martin of Lisbon, ME. Other survivors include his brother Carl Bucholdt and friend Larry Dziekan of Metairie, LA, special cousin Kari Bucholdt of Gordon, Uncle Oddie (Doc) and Aunt Anna Bucholdt of Iowa, Sister in-Laws Jeannie Perttu, Bergland, MI and Shirley (Ed) Strahs of Onalaska, WI. Peter also leaves behind numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and many military families and special friends who blessed his life.
Upon his passing, Peter’s wish was to donate his body for education and science research which was coordinated through Science Care.
Even though Peter’s life was too short, you would never know it by all of the stories he had to share. In honor of all these memories there will be a Celebration of His Life in June where people can reminisce and share their favorite stories of him.
The family would like to thank all of his caregivers, including his doctors, nurses and the Marshwood Center.
Memorial Donations can be made to the American Cancer Society, Cystic Fibrosis Foundation or a charity of your choice.
