“Tim Sample, noted Maine humorist, has made it through enough Maine winters to know how it’s done,” a release about the show states. “Born in Aroostook County and raised in Boothbay Harbor, Tim recorded his first comedy album in 1979. In the years since then, he has released more than three dozen CDs, videos, DVDs, and books of Down East humor, making him a household name throughout New England.”
There will be a cash bar and relaxed seating, according to the release.

Gaslight Theater production nears end
HALLOWELL — The final two performances of Gaslight Theater’s production of Annie Baker’s “Circle Mirror Transformation” are scheduled for 7:30 p.m. today and Saturday at Hallowell City Hall.
The play centers on five people in an adult education theater class.
“Marty is an enthusiastic community center director who has not held this type of class for adults before,” a Gaslight Theater release states. “ No one, including Marty, knows what to expect nor are any of them ready for what happens as theater and acting games bring out emotions and feelings that have been hidden or under control.”

Author to share insights at SPACE
PORTLAND — Award-winning author Steve Almond will teach prose workshops and read from his fiction and nonfiction works on Saturday at SPACE Gallery.
Almond is the author of 10 books, most recently the short story collection, “God Bless America.” His fiction has appeared in the Best American Short Stories 2010 anthology and other publications. He has also contributed articles to the Boston Globe, Los Angeles Times, Wall Street Journal and other magazines and newspapers.
Beginning at noon Saturday, Almond will teach two workshops: “ How to Make Your Prose Sing (and Why It Should).” and “How to Use Your Obsessions to Jumpstart Your Writing.”

WATERVILLE — ACAT of Waterville will hold auditions for “I Hate Hamlet,” by Paul Rudnick, at 10:30 a.m. Sunday and 6 p.m. Monday the Third Floor Dance Studio of the Stearns Center at 93 Main St.
Sumner Hayward will direct the production, which has roles for three women between 20 and 70 years old, and for three men between 20 and 40 years old. Auditions will be cold readings from the script.

PSO, Choral Arts Society share stage
PORTLAND — The Portland Symphony Orchestra’s (PSO) Tuesday Classical concert at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Merrill Auditorium will feature works by Johannes Brahms, Francis Poulenc and Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov.
Featured guest artists are The Masterworks Chorus of The Choral Art Society and soprano Jessica Cates.
The concert will be conducted by PSO Music Director Robert Moody and The Choral Art Society’s conductor, Robert Russell.
A Concert Conversation with Robert Russell will be held in the Rehearsal Hall at 6:15 p.m., and a Post-Concert Q&A with the artists will take place on stage after the show.
This concert is part of the annual Orchestras Feeding America campaign, in partnership with Good Shepherd Food Bank. People can attend the dress rehearsal on Monday for free with the donation of nonperishable food items or a financial contribution, which also will be encouraged and accepted at Tuesday’s concert.

Mustache film festival sprouts in Portland
PORTLAND — No Umbrella Media, organizers of New England’s largest mustache pageant, announce plans to host the first International Moustache Film Festival in 2012.
The festival will be held immediately before the fifth annual Stache Pag on March 30 at Port City Music Hall, 504 Congress St.
The film festival will begin at 7: 30 p. m. The mustache pageant will start at 10 p.m.
The festival is open to all film makers. Films must be eight minutes or less in duration. The winner will be chosen and receive a cash prize. The film selection committee must receive all film submissions by March 24.
The beneficiaries of the festival and fifth annual Stache Pag will be Northeast Historic Film, MENSK and Mystache Fights Cancer.
Some of the many film categories will be: Best Foreign Mustache Film, Best Growth Story, Best Collection of Mustaches in One Film and Best Fake Mustache Movie.
Restaurateurs rally for Gary’s House
PORTLAND — Mercy Health System’s seventh annual Gourmet Gala for Gary’s House Food and Wine Extravaganza will be held on March 21 at the Holiday Inn by the Bay.
The event will feature 16 restaurants and chefs from greater Portland’s restaurants and caterers.
Gary’s House opened in 1998 as a safe and affordable place for families to stay when a loved one is in the hospital.
Hosted by comedian Joe Ricchio with guest judge Sam Hayward, James Beard Award winner and Chef at Fore Street, the gala includes both a silent and a live auction, as well as live music by Paper Street Jazz Band. New this year will be a beer tasting.
This event is open to the public. Doors open at 6 p.m. Judging will run from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Admission costs $40 per person.
