PHIPPSBURG — A 55-year-old man was taken to Mid Coast Hospital early Saturday morning for treatment of burns and smoke inhalation sustained in a fire on Edy Drive.
The blaze, in the Sebasco area of Phippsburg, destroyed a workshop and sent a man to a local hospital for treatment of minor burns.
Arthur Herson, who was staying in the workshop at the time, was taken to Mid Coast, according to Sgt. Kenneth Grimes of the Maine State Fire Marshal’s Office. He was released later, Phippsburg Fire Chief Jim Totman said.
Firefighters from five towns were able to save nearby homes, however, and prevent the blaze from spreading into the woods.
Phippsburg firefighters responded just before 2 a.m. Saturday to Eby Drive, where a workshop near the home of Warren and Melissa Alexander was burning, Totman said.
Mutual aid from Bath, West Bath, Arrowsic and Woolwich fire departments responded because other houses were in danger, Totman said, and “the fire was up in the woods a ways.”
Fire crews contained the blaze within 30 minutes, according Totman, who noted firefighters made “a very good save on the house,” which sustained some melted siding and broken windows.
The shop was a total loss, however.
Grimes said the official cause of the fire will remain undetermined due to the extent of the damage, but investigators “found nothing to indicate it was anything but an accident.”
