DAMARISCOTTA — Heartwood Theater Company will deliver a staged reading of “Uncle Vanya,” by Russian playwright Anton Chekhov, at 7 p.m. Thursday as the final presentation in a series of monthly readings in collaboration with Skidompha Library.
“This classic Chekhov treasure, translated by Paul Schmidt, was reworked several times over nearly a decade, transforming it from his early action-filled melodrama, ‘The Wood Demon,’ into the moody, poignant masterpiece first performed in 1897,” a Heartwood release states. “ The story traverses effortlessly between comedy and tragedy, brimming with warmth and humor and melancholy.”
The reading takes place in the Skidompha Library atrium, at 81 Main St., Damariscotta. Suggested donations are $8 for adults or $5 for students.
No reservations are necessary. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. for general seating.
