WISCASSET — The Chewonki Camp for Girls offers a new course in wood and canvas canoe building during its April break and summer sessions.

According to a press release, the course will offer lessons in using woodworking tools, skills such as steambending, planing and sanding and varnishing, and lessons in the history of canoe building, how to use the crafts, and the basics of boat design.

“I purchased a 1927 Old Town Guide Canoe about 10 years ago through a camp connection,” said Chewonki Girls Camp director Abby Burbank in the release. “ I was taught how to repair that canoe by renowned Connecticut canoe builder Schuyler Thomson. I couldn’t stop at that.”

All participants in the summer camp in the Debsconeag Wilderness will have the opportunity to learn to build canoes. A shorter program open to boys and girls will take place at Chewonki’s Wiscasset campus from Sunday to April 18.
