BRUNSWICK

The Bowdoin International Music Festival will present the JACK Quartet on July 25. It will be the fourth concert in the festival’s Monday Showcase series featuring string quartets from around the globe in Bowdoin’s Studzinski Recital Hall.

The quartet will be playing Guillaume de Machaut’s (arr. Ari Streisfeld) Three Pieces, John Zorn’s The Remedy of Fortune, Carlo Gesualdo’s (arr. Ari Streisfeld) Three Madrigals, Caroline Shaw’s Ritornello 2.sq.2.j, Rodericus’ (arr. Christopher Otto) Angelorum Psalat and Iannis Xenakis’s Tetras.

Deemed “superheroes of the new music world” by the Boston Globe, the JACK Quartet is “the go-to quartet for contemporary music, tying impeccable musicianship to intellectual ferocity and a take-no-prisoners sense of commitment.” (Washington Post) “They are a musical vehicle of choice to the next great composers who walk among us.” (Toronto Star) The quartet is comprised of violinists Christopher Otto and Ari Streisfeld, violist John Pickford Richards, and cellist Kevin McFarland. JACK is focused on new work.

Tickets and subscriptions are now on sale for all of the festival’s summer concerts. Individual tickets are $40 and subscriptions are $175. Monday subscriptions allow patrons to hear five of the world’s finest string quartets perform as well as collaborate with Festival faculty. All Monday Showcase concerts begin at 7:30 p.m.

“Embodying the trend of reimagining the traditional classical concert experience, the JACK Quartet brings an exciting take to historical gems of the repertoire,” said Director of Admissions Dan Nitsch. “Their adventurous proposition for the audience is poised to tease both intellectual and emotional reactions. Pairing works of the fourteenth century with those written in the past year is a rare undertaking.”
