“Crossing Delancey,” a romantic comedy about a doting Jewish grandmother who is determined to see her granddaughter get married before she dies, will be performed at the Public Theatre in Lewiston beginning Friday.
“This story, about an ambitious young woman caught between her grandmother’s world on Delancey Street in lower Manhattan, and her modern desire for a love and life beyond what her family knows, reminds us of the difference between what we think we should have and what our heart really wants, and the importance of being true to ourselves,” said Director Christopher Schario.
Voted the “Best theatre in Maine” three years in a row by Down East Magazine, The Public Theatre hires professional actors from New York. The role of Bubbie, the Jewish grandmother, will be played by Carol Schweid. Schweid was in the original cast of the musical “A Chorus Line” on Broadway and was previously seen at The Public Theatre as the grandmother in “Over the River and Through the Woods.”
Also returning to The Public Theatre will be Marina Re as Hannah the matchmaker, and Peter Simon Hilton as Tyler, a desirable, yet unattainable, famous author. The role of the granddaughter, Izzy, will be played by Deanna McGovern, and Sam the pickleman will be played by Ben Rosenblatt.
The set for Crossing Delancey, which is meant to recreate a bit of both of New York City’s lower eastside and Izzy’s “uptown” world, has been designed by Judy Staicer with lighting by Bart Garvey and costumes by Kathleen Payton Brown. The Public Theatre’s Annual Silent Auction will be held in the lobby during the run of the production.
Crossing Delancey runs May 6-8 and 12-15. Show times are Thursday and Friday at 7:30 p.m., Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. with an extra Saturday matinee on May 14 at 3 p.m. Tickets are $20 for adults and $5 anyone 18 and under.
