Textile artist Trelawney O’Brien will offer a workshop in the Japanese resist-dyeing technique, shibori, at Patten Free Library on Friday at 3:30 p.m. The workshop is free, open to teenagers (seventh grade and up), and will be held in the Library Park Gazebo. Pre-registration is required as space is limited. Light refreshments will be served.

“This is a very hands-on class that teaches about natural dyes and traditional Japanese textiles. Students will be shown how to prepare the cloth, mix indigo, and then observe the magic of oxidation as the fabric changes color before their eyes.” said O’Brien. Students will take home one yard of fabric dyed with their own unique design.

O’Brien has taught art classes at the Farnsworth Museum since 2011, and also dyes yarn for Swan Island Blankets and creates fabric art for her company, treyummy.

To register for the program, call the library at (207) 443-5141. For more information, contact Roberta Jordan at 443-5141, extension 25, or by email, rjordan@patten.lib.me.us.
