The following is a schedule of events for September at Topsham Public Library.
Preschool Storytime: Wednesdays at10 a.m.
Each themed Preschool Storytime involves singing songs, dancing and playing instruments to guitar accompaniment, participating in action rhymes and of course, reading stories. Storytime lasts approximately 30-45 minutes and is for preschool children ages 3-5 and is often followed by an art project. Storytime is for children ages 3-5.
Baby & Me: Thursdays at 10 a.m.
Baby & Me gives young children the opportunity to hear lots of language and music while spending time with their grownups. Kids can sing songs, participate in action rhymes and share a board book. The program lasts about 15 -20 minutes, and is for babies ages birth to 23 months.
Music & Rhyme Time for Twos: Thursdays at 10:30 a.m.
At each Music & Rhyme Time kids can sing songs, dance and play instruments to guitar accompaniment, participate in action rhymes and read one short story. Each session lasts about 20- 30 minutes. For two year olds and their grownup.
FARTS — Fast Arts in the teen room: Through Sept. 17
School supply raffle. Guess the number of school supplies in the jar — closest guess without going over wins. One guess per visit. The Winning name will be drawn on Sept. 17. Ages 11-18 only.
Joy of the Pen Writing Competition: Opens Sept. 3
The Joy of the Pen Writing Competition is open to year-round Maine residents for unpublished works only. Entries will be accepted in the categories of fiction, poetry, creative nonfiction, teen, and Maine related nonfiction. The deadline for applications is Oct. 1 at 4 p.m. Find out more at joyofthepen.topshamlibrary.org .
Sip ‘n Stitch: Sept. 3 & 17 from 10 a.m. to noon
Join this knitting and crocheting group that meets on the first and third Saturdays of the month. All abilities are welcome. Come and work on a project, share patterns, check out the library’s knitting and crocheting resources and relax with a cup of coffee or tea.
A Night of Classical Music: Sept. 6 at 6 p.m.
The Midcoast Baptist
Players will play Schubert’s Octet in F major arranged for quintet.
Topsham Historical Society Meeting: Sept.13, 6:30 p.m.
The circa 1850 hand-colored photograph of Mary Ellen Whitten in an elaborate gilded frame hung for nearly 150 years in the Topsham Public Library’s former home, the Whitten house. It remains in the Library today to honor the generous bequest of Mary Ellen’s sister, Sarah, in 1941 of the former Whitten residence to house a town library. The public is invited to an official “unveiling” of the restored portrait and frame. Immediately following, historian Scott T. Hanson, will give a presentation of his most recent findings on the Whitten family’s history from 1764 to 1941.
Topsham Garden Club meeting on heirloom apples: Sept. 14, noon to 3 p.m.
Coffee and dessert will be provided, and attendees are encouraged to bring a lunch. A business meeting will begin at 12:30 p.m. with the program beginning at 1:30 p.m. Join John Bunker, of Fedco Seeds, to find out the latest info on heirloom apples. John, the author of “Not Far From the Tree: A Brief History of the Apples and the Orchards of Palermo, Maine,” will also fill us in on the history of apples throughout Maine. Bring apples and Bunker will attempt to identify them.
Men’s Book Group: Sept. 15, 6-7 p.m.
New Members Welcome! We meet on the 3rd Thursday of each month. This month’s book is “Code Talker” by Chester Nez. For more info call 725-1727 or email emma@topshamlibrary.org.
3rd Saturday Teen Crafting: Sept. 17, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Stop by the YA room for the library’s casual teen crafts program. Each month will have a different craft project. No registration required. Ages 11-18 only. This month’s project will be leaf painting.
Friends of the Topsham Public Library Book Sale: Sept. 23-25
The library will close at at noon on Sept. 23 for the book sale and will reopen on Sept. 27. The book sale will begin Sept. 23 from 5-7 p.m. with the Members of the Friends preview sale and continue Sept. 24 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The final day of the sale is Sept. 25 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Mystery Readers Roundtable: Sept. 27, 3- 4 p.m.
Once a month, fans of the mystery genre gather over hot drinks and share their favorite crime novels. This month members will share their summer reading.
CREA presents: Locallyproduced Energy: Sept. 27, 6:30 p.m.
CREA is a non-profit organization dedicated to using the resources of the Cathance River Preserve to educate students, educators and the public. To this end, CREA offers a monthly program in partnership with the library, featuring local speakers and wild life presentations. This month’s theme is locally produced energy.
