“I will give you treasures of darkness and riches hidden in secret places, so that you may know that it is I, the Lord, the God of Israel, who calls you by name. Isaiah 45:3

Embracing the Darkness

Since the summer solstice we have lost over five hours of daylight. I am usually up and about in the early morning hours, and because light is necessary if we are to have any perception of color, the world outside my window is a black and white world, much like the movies and television shows of yesteryear. It is quiet and prayerful, a time to be alone with, and feel the comforting presence of God. Darkness can provide an opportunity for introspection and insight, but if we refuse to allow our eyes to see anything beyond the darkness, we may sense a feeling of abandonment. But God is present in the very darkness of our being, in our broken dreams, our shattered expectations, our sorrow and grief, our disappointments and declining health. And it is often in that darkness that we find God waiting to reveal his light and glory to us. Just as we can count on the light to return after the winter solstice, so we can rely on God to pierce through our darkness to bring light and color to our world.
