
FEEDING THE FISH AT SPRINGWORKS. The Lisbon-based company uses tilapia as the source of fertilizer for its aquaponic system. The fish produce waste that is then converted into nutrients suitable for the plants to absorb and in turn the plants clean the water for the fish; it is a symbiotic relationship. The company harvests and sells its fish to local markets such as Bow Street Market and Harbor Fish Market.

SPRINGWORKS GROWS 250,000 heads of lettuce annually in its greenhouse. Once the second greenhouse is up and running, it will be producing closer to 750,000 heads. Staff members work to ensure its two distributors and 30 retail customers get high-quality products.

THE UNIQUE SPACING OF ITS SYSTEM allows Springworks to grow plants faster and closer together. Because of this, the current greenhouse is 16 times more productive than a traditional farm.

TREVOR KENKEL, founder and president of Springworks. Kenkel is a student at Bowdoin College in Brunswick, double majoring in economics and biology while continuing to operate and grow Springworks.
