Thornton Oaks Retirement Community will present Shapes and Spaces, an exhibit of contemporary art pieces by Marcia Sewall, beginning Dec. 7 with an opening reception at at 4 p.m. Sewall will be there to discuss her work and respond to questions.
The paintings in the exhibit are primarily abstract.
“My work is intuitive. A shape, a color, a line will set in motion within me what is visually to happen next … and so forth, never knowing the beginning where a piece will end,” Sewall said. “It is the language of art that intrigues me … just what can be expressed without approaching representation. For the most part, it is a sense of play.”
Marcia has been a children’s book illustrator for 35 years. She’s illustrated stories for many authors with many different sensibilities, using a variety of different techniques including scratchboard, gouache, gouache resist, transparent watercolor, pencil, ink and more. Her works are on view throughout New England including the Ronald McDonald House, the Family Justice Center and Shattuck Hospital in Boston. Sewall currently resides at Thornton Oaks.

Thornton Oaks Retirement Community is a homeowners cooperative and includes 46 cottages and 98 apartments on 29 wooded acres in Brunswick. Thornton Oaks is affiliated with Mid Coast-Parkview Health.
