BATH — On Friday, Dec. 5, 2014 John A. Grill Sr., 85, of Bath, went to be with his late second wife Doris Nuesse, his sister Elizabeth, his son Michael and his immigrant parents John and Mary Mahkota Grill of Slovenia. John was born on June 30, 1929, and raised in Manhattan, NY (he was fond of mentioning “across the street from Katz’ Deli”).

Educated in Manhattan schools, he was a graduate of Lasalle High School, class of ’47. At Manhattan College, class of ’51, he served as class treasurer and received his degree in electrical engineering. He went on to pursue his graduate studies at Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute.

John’s working career began in New York with Arma Inc. assigned to the Anti-submarine warfare division. In 1952, while he was contracting to Bath Iron Works he met his first wife Sandra Johnson of Bath, with whom he had four children. In 1968, the family moved from New York to Bath where John was a participant in the DX Project with BIW. Following that he went to work for Cianbro on Maine Yankee. John held many honorable positions during his employment and was most proud of his accomplishments while president and a founding partner of Rent-All of Bath as well as: Western Auto, Bath Cycle and later Bath Industrial Sales.

In 1974, the family built one of the first Shelter Institute homes in Woolwich. The property remained his home until two years ago when he suffered the loss of his second wife Doris, whom he married in 1995. The Plant Home was his current residence.

John is survived by his daughter Susan and her husband John Deterling of West Bath, and his sons: Christopher and his wife Maria of Arrowsic and John A. Jr. (Tony) and his wife Mary of Bath; six grandchildren: Daniel Shiells, Erin Crosman, Olivia Deterling, Haley, Michael and Sarah Grill; one great-grandchild: Hudson Crosman; one sister, Mimi Mejac of Potomac, MD and many nieces and nephews.

There will be a celebration of his life at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 20, 2014, at Grace Episcopal Church, 1100 Washington St., Bath. A gathering of family and friends will follow at the church fellowship hall. Memorial contributions may be made to the Plant Home, 1 Washington St., Bath, ME 04530 or Bath Area Food Bank, P.O.
