BOWDOIN — Muriel Tompkins Marston, age 93 of Bowdoin, died Thursday, October 25, 2012 at her residence.

Muriel was born in Hyde Park, NY on September 23, 1919, daughter of Jesse and Ethel Foreman Tompkins. She graduated from Rhinebeck High School in Rhinebeck, NY, Class of 1936. She later graduated from New Paltz State Teachers College in New Paltz, NY. and received her BA in Education from the State University of NY.

On September 28, 1947, she married Roland G. Marston in Rhinebeck, NY.

She taught in a one room school and later in Schenectady, New York and Wilmington, DE, retiring in 1980. She had lived in Wilmington for 30 years prior to moving to Maine.

Muriel attended the Shelter Institute and built a cottage. She and Roland later built a home beginning in 1981.

She was a former member of the Friends Meeting in Wilmington, DE, a member of Durham Friends Meeting in Durham ME. She served on the Brunswick Area Church Council, was a member of the Cancer Support Group, a Hospice Volunteer, a LACO Volunteer and Board Member, and a Reading Volunteer at Bowdoin Elementary School.

Muriel enjoyed traveling in the United States and Canada, and her favorite trip was to Big Horn Mountain, Wyoming.

She was predeceased by her husband.

Surviving are her son, Paul Marston and daughter in law, Elaine Marston of Tacoma, WA; her daughter, Karen Marston and son in law, Michael Rivera of Bowdoin ME; and her granddaughter, Rev. Ruth Marston of Olympia, WA; and a brother, David Tompkins of Rhinebeck, NY.

A memorial service will be held at a later date at the Durham Friends Meeting House. In lieu of flowers, donations in Muriel’s memory can be made to the Durham Friends Meeting House, 532 Quaker Meeting House Road, Durham, ME 04222.
