David was born on Oct. 19, 1938, in Chicago, Ill., the son of Clemons Traut and Clara Moritz. David spent his childhood in Chicago, along with brothers Clem and Tom Traut.
In 1956 David enlisted in the United States Navy, and married Caroline Farrell in 1962. David and Carolyn traveled extensively throughout David’s 23-year naval career with duty stations including Florida, Washington, Iceland and Bermuda, and continued to travel after his 2001 retirement. David enjoyed spending time with his family and shared his love of travel, the outdoors and animal life with them.
David was an avid golfer and bowler, and enjoyed taking trips to the casino with his wife. David had a love for cats and also cared for many injured animals over the years, including multiple squirrels and birds.
David was predeceased by his wife in July 2012.
He is survived by son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Jean Townsend of Brunswick; brother, Clem Traut of Illinois; granddaughter, Michelle Freeman and husband Stuart Freeman of Topsham; grandson and wife, David and Jessica Townsend of Massachusetts; and great-grandchildren, Madison Townsend, Nicholas Freeman and Nathan Freeman.
Visiting hours will take place Friday, April 3, from 5- 7 p.m. at Stetson’s Funeral Home, 12 Federal St., Brunswick, where a funeral service will be held on Saturday, April 4, at 1 p.m. Burial in Varney Cemetery, Brunswick, will be held later in the spring.
