The Cathance River Education Alliance will present “Cathance Mill History” at 6:30 tonight at the Topsham Public Libary.
Former Brunswick educator Fred Koerber will give a presentation about the history of the Cathance Mill as it involves minerals.
The rich feldspar veins that run beneath Topsham generated a vital commercial engine that employed many workers in the difficult and dangerous task of quarrying, transporting and processing the stone in the 19th and 20th centuries, Koerber said in a news release.
“The well being of families and the community itself rose and fell with the fortunes of the feldspar business,” Koerber said in the release. “From its first recognition of value in 1751, through the rise to prominence at the beginning of the 20th century, to its demise during the Great Depression, Topsham’s feldspar industry helped shape the destiny of the community.”
The presentation is part of a yearlong series of monthly community programs held the last Tuesday evening of the month at the library. Koerber’s “passion for exploring the rich history of the Pejepscot region has led to several research projects with local students,” according to the release.
