KIKO LOPEZ plays the role of Jesus in New England Regional Theater Company’s production of “Godspell, Jr.” His followers, left of Kiko to right, are Emma Rankins, Sophia Wood, Olivia Botting, Maya Lopez and Claire Dauge-Roth. The play opens today and runs through May 26 at Winter Street Center, 880 Washington St., Bath.
“Godspell, Jr.” is a version of the popular, well-loved musical created especially for younger cast members.
“Godspell” is an Anglo-Saxon word meaning “good word” or “good news.” It eventually became the word “gospel.” The show is based on the Gospel according to St. Matthew and draws from various theatrical traditions, such as pantomime, charades and vaudeville in a unique reflection on the life of Jesus, with a message of kindness, tolerance and love.
In the first act followers of Jesus act out the parables and listen attentively as Jesus explains their meaning. The second act turns more serious as it depicts the Last Supper and the betrayal of Jesus and his Crucifixion. The show is very moving and heartwarming and the energy is positive and uplifting, according to a news release.
NERTC decided to perform the show at the Winter Street Center due to the nature of the set. “Godspell, Jr.” will be performed in the “round” allowing the audience to surround the stage.
Cast members include Kiko Lopez of Brunswick as Jesus and Brian Pelletier of West Bath as Judas. Followers include Claire Dauge Roth of Bath, Sophia Wood of Auburn, Taylor Messermen of Brunswick, Sarah Young of Woolwich, Amberly Shea of Brunswick, Cayleigh Hearth of Walpole, Olivia Botting of Lisbon Falls, Emma Rankins of Pownal and Maya Lopez of Brunswick.
Christopher Holmes of Boothbay directs the show, with Rebecca Beck of Brunswick as music director. Choreography is in the hands of 13-year-old Claire Dauge Roth. The stage manager is Amanda Read, with tech director Dylan Withers and sound director Devon Cromwell.
Showtimes are May 17, 18, 24 and 25 at 7:30 p.m. and on May 19 and 26 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $15/$12. Group discounts are available.
