Kibler kicks track season off right

BOSTON — The Fitchburg State men’s and women’s indoor track and field teams opened their 2011-12 seasons on Saturday as the squads competed in the Jay Carisella Invitational, hosted by Northeastern University.

On the track, the men’s team saw several MASCAC qualifying performances, as senior Chris Kibler of Bath earned the best postseason mark of the afternoon. He qualified for the Division III New England’s and ECAC’s in the 500-meter run, boasting a personal best time of 15.15.

The Fitchburg State men’s and women’s track teams return to action this upcoming Saturday at Harvard University at 10 a.m.

Husson, Zaharchuk roll to victory

BANGOR — In front of the Sports Hall of Fame Class of 2011, who were honored at the half, the Husson University men’s basketball team defeated the visiting Mariners of Maine Maritime Academy by a score of 77-64.

With the win the Eagles improved to 1-4 and started the North Atlantic Conference season with a 1-0 record. The Mariners fell to 1-4.

The Eagles were led by Marc Zaharchuk’s 18 points, one of four Eagles to score in double figures. Husson shot 46 percent from the floor and were 7-of-14 from 3- point range.

Former Mt. Ararat High Schools standout Shawn Dostie of Bowdoinham led Maine Maritime Academy with a game-high 21 points and pulled down eight rebounds.

Husson visits Castleton on Friday and Green Mountain on Saturday at 1 p.m., with MMA taking on Green Mountain Friday and visiting Castleton on Saturday.

CMCC doubles-up Vermont Technical

LEWISTON — Central Maine Community College raced out to a big lead and cruised from there for a 50- 24 Yankee Conference women’s basketball victory over Vermont Technical College on Saturday.

The win gives CMCC a 3-1 conference mark and 4-2 record overall.

Karlee Biskup led the Mustangs with 11 points and five assists. Lisbon native Jenn Caton was solid defensively, picking up five steals and seven rebounds to go along with five points.

CMCC faces University of Maine-Augusta at the Augusta Civic Center on Wednesday.

CMCC men score 89 in Yankee win

LEWISTON — Six players scored in double figures as the Central Maine Community College men’s basketball team rolled to an 89-69 victory over Paul Smith College of New York on Saturday.

Former Wiscasset standout Nick Hinkley led the 10- 3 Mustangs (4-2 in the Yankee Conference) with 22 points, while Alonzo James of Bath chipped in 12 points in the victory. Freshman Samson Olayemi had a tripe-double — 13 points, 11 rebounds and 12 assists.

Bowdoin swimmers earn fifth place

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — The Bowdoin College men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams both collected fifth-place finishes in seven-team fields at the competitive MIT Invitational last weekend.

The Polar Bear men totaled 324.5 points in the twoday event to finish behind MIT (1,397.5), New York University (688.5), Keene State (588) and Tufts (490.5), but ahead of Wheaton (186) and Colby (127).

The women’s team finished with 316 points to beat Colby (185) and Harvard (152) but trailing MIT (1,308), NYU (824), Tufts (564) and Wheaton (392).

Nathan Mecray posted a third-place finish in the 50- yard freestyle (21.03) and also took fifth in the 100 freestyle (46.86) for Bowdoin. First-year diver Thomas Kramer carded a pair of strong results, earning a third-place finish in the 3-meter dive (218.20) and a fourth-place finish in the 1-meter dive (221.45).

Chris Granata was fifth in the 200 yard butterfly (1:56.24) for Bowdoin, while the men’s 200-yard medley relay earned the top relay finish for the Polar Bears, as Basyl Stuyvesant, Mecray, Mac Routh and William Shi took third place in 1:35.76.

The top individual finish for the women’s team came from Caitlin Hutchinson-Maddox, who took fourth place in the 200-yard butterfly in a time of 2:14.39. Sophomore Maeve O’Leary was sixth in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:10.04), while Helen Newton was seventh in the 200 yard breaststroke (2:32.82).

Furbush added to Sea Dogs Hot Stove

SOUTH PORTLAND — Seattle Mariners pitcher and South Portland native Charlie Furbush has been added to the Portland Sea Dogs’ lineup of guests for the annual Hot Stove Dinner and Silent Auction.

Furbush joins Red Sox catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia, and Red Sox outfielder and former Sea Dog Josh Reddick as the featured guests.

The event will take place on Jan. 13 at 5:30 p.m. at the Sable Oaks Marriott.

Furbush posted a 4-10 record while pitching for the Detroit Tigers and Seattle Mariners in 2011 with a 5.48 earned-run average. After graduating from South Portland High School, he attended St. Joseph’s College, posting a 7-1 record with a 1.75 ERA before transferring to LSU. He was drafted in the fourth round of the 2007 draft by the Tigers.
