BRUNSWICK

Police arrested the former assistant manager of Fashion Bug in Merrymeeting Plaza on Thursday afternoon for allegedly breaking into the store Thursday morning and stealing cash and checks from a safe.

Matisse Deshazier, 29, of 538 Old Portland Road was arrested at her home just after 4 p.m. Thursday, Deputy Chief Marc Hagan of the Brunswick Police Department said today.

Officers responded at 7:47 a.m. Thursday to the store at 147 Bath Road for a report that someone had shattered the front door with a brick, entered the business and stolen an undisclosed amount of cash and checks from a safe, according to Hagan.

A witness described someone they allegedly saw exit the back of the business shortly before police arrived.

Detective Greg Mears and Detective Sgt. Martin Rinaldi responded, and after a daylong investigation, arrested Deshazier on a South Portland Police Department warrant for theft by deception. She also was charged with burglary, theft by deception and criminal mischief in connection with the Brunswick case.

Deshazier was taken to Cumberland County Jail and released on $ 480 cash bail. She is scheduled to appear in Cumberland County Superior Court on Jan. 17.

Hagan said Deshazier was employed at Fashion Bug until about a month ago, although he declined to comment on the conditions that prompted her departure.
