Suggs, UNE stuns 14th-ranked Colby
WATERVILLE — The University of New England women’s basketball team held 14th-ranked Colby scoreless for the first three minutes of overtime en route to a 70-63 victory over the Mules at Wadsworth Gymnasium on Tuesday.
The win is just the second for UNE (5-1) in the last 11 meetings between the teams. The setback was the first of the season for Colby, which also sits at 5-1.
Kelley Paradis led all scorers with 26 points to pace the Nor’easters, while Beth Suggs of Bath had her second double double of the season with 14 points and a career-best 17 rebounds.
Tied 56-56 after regulation, Paradis scored the first four points of the extra session for a 60-56 UNE lead.
The Nor’easters visit St. Joseph’s College at Standish on Saturday at 1 p.m.
Bowdoin to host food drive skate
BRUNSWICK — The Bowdoin College ice hockey teams will host their annual “Skate With the Polar Bears” Food Drive this Sunday from 12:15 p.m. to 2:15 p.m. at Sidney J. Watson Arena.
Admission to the open skate is one non-perishable food item or paper product to be donated to the local food bank.
“ The holiday season is when food banks need our help the most,” said men’s ice hockey head coach Terry Meagher. “ The demands of the season dwindle their supplies and this is a way for us to help them replenish.”
“This has always been a fun event, dating back to my time as a Bowdoin student,” said women’s head coach Marissa O’Neil. “Not only is it for a great cause, but it’s exciting to see our youngest fans interact with their favorite players.”
The free skate is open to all ages. Children are asked to bring a protective helmet.
Brunswick’s Burnett finishes career
MANCHESTER, N. H. — Former Brunswick High School standout P.J. Burnette recently wrapped up a standout four-year career with the Southern New Hampshire University men’s soccer program.
Burnette split time between midfield and defense over his college soccer career, appearing in 62 games over his four seasons, starting 50. A twotime Third Team Northeast- 10 All-Conference selection, he finished his career with 10 goals and an assist.
In 2011 Burnette notched six goals and an assist en route to NE-10 All-Conference accolades.
During these four years, Southern New Hampshire posted a record of 59- 14- 13 (.762), the most victories for a senior class since the 1998 group posted 62 in four years. The Penmen made four trips to the NCAA Tournament, including two to the Division II quarterfinals (2009, 2011).
Southern New Hampshire captured a pair of Northeast- 10 regular season titles (2008, ’09), as well as the 2008 NE-10 Tournament title.
Hyde JV boys open with win
SOUTH BERWICK — Nabil Eshrigan scored a game-high 11 points as the Hyde School- Bath jayvee boys basketball team rolled to a 49-10 seasonopening victory over Berwick Academy on Wednesday.
Luis Allen chipped in five points for the Phoenix, who are slated to host Thornton Academy this upcoming Wednesday at 4 p.m.
Wells, Indiana at Georgia Invitational
ATHENS, Ga. — James Wells and his Indiana University teammates competed in the Georgia Swimming and Diving Invitational over the weekend.
The Phippsburg resident swam the opening leg of the 200 medley relay, which took fourth in 1:27.86.
Wells was also 16th in the 100 butterfly (49.96) and fifth in the 100 backstroke (47.86).
Indiana is off until Jan. 7 when the Hoosiers visit Michigan.
Bath Middle 7th girls top Oak Hill
WALES — The Bath Middle School seventh- grade girls basketball team won at Oak Hill 27-24 on Wednesday.
Noa Sreden was the leading scorer with 10 points, while Ann Tolan, Sierra Wallace and Amanda Gagne chipped in with four each. Madeline Mitchell and Marissa Parks were also offensive contributors.
Hope Faulkingham, Karen Yurek, Isabel Doran, Kelsea Albertson and Emma Gould each turned in strong defensive efforts.
Capital City Hoops Classic on tap
AIGUSYA — Kennebec Savings Bank is the major sponsor of the 2011 Capital City Hoop Classic basketball tournament, scheduled to be held at the Augusta Civic Center on Dec. 27-28.
This year’s 17th annual tournament will feature six of the top boys and girls teams in Maine, with each playing a minimum of two games. Championship games for both boys and girls will be held on their respective nights.
All proceeds support basketball through the Cony High School All-Sports Boosters organization.
The Brunswick boys are scheduled to compete.
Tickets prices for a threegame session are $6 for adults and $3 for students, while allday passes ( seven games, including championship) are $12 and $6.
