BRUNSWICK —PeaceWorks will host a talk and book signing by Frida Berrigan at Curtis Library in Brunswick at 7 p.m. Thursday, June 4. Berrigan will discuss her book “It Runs in the Family: On Being Raised by Radicals and Growing into Rebellious Motherhood.”
Frida is the daughter of Philip Berrigan, American activist and former Catholic priest, whose actions with the Plowshares Movement include boarding a destroyer at BIW in 1997 where he and several others hammered on Tomahawk Cruise Missile hatches.
Her book, according to a review by James Carroll, is ”A moving chronicle of the things that make for love and peace, elegantly written by a woman who knows more than most about both. How to balance family, children, intimate partnership with urgent rescue of the gravely endangered planet? With wit, stark honesty, and deep compassion, Frida Berrigan suggests a simple answer, drawing on the bliss and grit of her own life as a mother — and as an activist. …This book matters enormously.”
Berrigan is a columnist for Waging Nonviolence and serves on the National Committee of the War Resisters League. She lives in New London, Conn. with her husband Patrick and their three children.
This presentation is free and open to the public. A basket will be passed for those who want to support Frida’s travel costs and the rental of the Library space.
BRUNSWICK — The Theater Project presents the 19th annual production of “Voices in the Mirror” at 7:30 p.m. tonight, 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 30, and at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 31. The play is directed by Wendy Poole and created entirely by 30 high school students.
Part sketch comedy, part sarcastic observation, plenty of pop culture references and surprising insights into serious issues, “Voices in the Mirror” is raw teenage expression in an orderly fashion at a ridiculous level. Some call it “Saturday Night Live” by teens, some just call it the funniest thing they’ve seen all year. Whether it’s school stress, relationship anxiety, annoying parents or weird friends, the kids of “Voices” have an opinion on it.
This will be the 19th performance of “Voices,” which changes every year. Get your tickets now to find out why “Voices” is a yearly tradition.
“Voices in the Mirror” is recommended for audiences age 14 and up, due to occasional adult language and subject matter. Tickets are Pay- What-You-Want with a suggested price of $12. Tickets are available at 729-8584 or online at theaterproject.com. The Theater Project is located at 14 School St. in Brunswick.
